About The Position

Weir Marine Engineering is seeking a Systems Safety & Environmental (SS&E) Engineer to join our Combat and Control Systems (CCS) team. This role supports the River Class Destroyer (RCD) Project at the Department of National Defence (DND) Office in Dartmouth, NS. The SS&E Engineer will be responsible for conducting System Safety and Environmental Engineering activities, including hazard identification, risk quantification, and recommending mitigations. A primary responsibility is managing the RCD Hazard Tracking System (HTS) and producing Hazard Management Assessment Reports and Safety Case Reports. The position involves collaboration with Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for the Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) of Industry-supplied Safety and Environmental materials. This is a full-time, permanent position offering a blend of in-office and remote work, providing an opportunity to engage with advanced technology for the RCN's future fleet and modern Canadian system safety engineering.

Requirements

• Must obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which necessitates Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Skilled in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels (both in-person and electronically) with peers, supervisors, and clients.
• Capable of drafting reports and technical correspondence.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge or experience in a Safety Engineering related discipline, such as Systems Safety, Functional Safety, Failure Modes Effects (and Criticality) Analysis, Software Safety, or Environmental Engineering.
• Familiarity with data modelling languages and MBSE frameworks such as UML, SysML, DODAF, DNDAF and UAF.

Responsibilities

• Conduct System Safety & Environment Engineering analysis across the entire RCD Capability, using various formal methods, to identify hazards, quantify risks, support safety assurance and change impact assessment, and recommend mitigation solutions compliant with Canadian Law, DND Policy & Regulations, and International Standards, such as IEC 61508, IEC 62061, and ISO 13849.
• Provide support to lifecycle phase reviews, system safety engineering working groups, and implement standards and processes such as those defined in US MIL-STD-882E (Military Standard) and Def-Stan 00-056 (UK MoD Defence Standard).
• Develop and review technical documentation, such as Safety Management Plans, Hazard Logs, Hazard Management Assessment Reports, Safety Case Reports, System Requirement Specifications, Interface Control Documents, and System Design Descriptions.
• Maintain positive, friendly, collaborative relationships with team members, and internal and external stakeholders.
• Liaise with subject matter experts, DND customers, and suppliers.
