The Mitre Corporation•Huntsville, AL
•$190,000 - $285,000•Onsite

About The Position

MITRE’s Systems Engineering Division is seeking a technical leader to serve as Systems of Systems (SoS) Integration Engineering Capability Chief Engineer (CCE). The position defines and drives technical strategy, execution, and application of SoS integration, advancing approaches that enable independently developed systems to work together to achieve mission outcomes. Areas of focus include architecture, interfaces, interoperability, technology insertion, and operational integration. The CCE collaborates with division leadership, department managers, peer CCEs, and partners to apply division capabilities to MITRE’s federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) programs. In coordination with the Division Chief Engineer, the CCE is accountable for the utility and quality of supported capabilities, including physical and virtual lab infrastructure, shared frameworks, and technical approaches. This is a technical leadership role rather than a formal people-management role, but it includes staff development and mentorship. The CCE also works with MITRE’s internal research and development program to shape research priorities and mentor staff from ideation through proposals and project execution. The position provides senior-principal-level technical support directly to MITRE work programs and sponsors, with a focus on SoS integration leadership. The role requires at least four days per week on-site and an active Top Secret U.S. government-issued security clearance. Candidates must be U.S. citizens to be eligible for a security clearance. The salary range is $190,000–$285,000 annually, with a midpoint of $237,500.

Requirements

  • At least 12 years of systems of systems integration or related systems engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree; or 10 years with a master’s degree; or 7 years with a Ph.D.; or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Deep technical expertise and recognition in systems of systems and systems of systems integration engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence strategic decisions in complex, multi-stakeholder, collaborative environments.
  • Track record of learning about and rapidly responding to new problems across varied domains.
  • Experience planning and leading integration analyses, trade studies, experimentation, or technical reviews while balancing mission outcomes, cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain challenging technical concepts to expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Mentoring experience in formal or informal roles across a range of staff experience levels and team sizes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency presenting complex technical issues virtually and in person.
  • Technical expertise and influence to improve mission outcomes in alignment with division strategy and in coordination with the Systems Engineering Chief Engineer.
  • Must have an active Top Secret U.S. government-issued security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance eligibility.
  • Must work on-site at least four days per week.

  • Active Top Secret/SCI clearance.
  • Experience integrating independently developed systems into complex operational capabilities or systems of systems.
  • Demonstrated success with technology insertion, interoperability, open systems, architecture, interfaces, or integration verification.
  • Experience addressing human, organizational, process, data, and technology dependencies in operational integration.
  • Experience using modeling, simulation, digital engineering, prototyping, or experimentation to reduce integration risk.
  • Track record of building internal and external partnerships and contributing to publications, conferences, or standards activities.
  • Experience applying AI or automation to integration engineering, test, analysis, or decision support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical quality efforts and contribute to the development and adoption of technical quality standards in work programs and labs/capabilities.
  • Drive SoS integration engineering quality through capability development, strategic investment recommendations, infrastructure stewardship, and technical development and mentorship.
  • Collaborate with the Division Chief Engineer, peer CCEs, and partners in MNS and MPS to shape technical products and reviews, set expectations for current and future work, and bring an SoS integration perspective grounded in the state of the art.
  • Execute and evolve division technical strategy in alignment with MITRE’s S&T strategy.
  • Identify opportunities in systems of systems engineering, interoperability, technology insertion, architecture, interfaces, and operational integration.
  • Identify innovation opportunities for work programs and internal research and development, and propose or lead cross-cutting initiatives to improve integration under mission conditions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with technical leaders across MITRE program divisions, internal research and development, and external partners.
  • Coordinate technical outreach to industry, academia, government communities, and other stakeholders to incorporate relevant integration practices and technologies into technical products.
  • Lead cross-department or cross-division technical initiatives as needed, with measurable impact.
  • Evaluate the health and quality of SoS integration engineering capabilities, including staff skills, facilities, integration environments, reusable frameworks, and mission-ready technology.
  • Recommend to division leadership whether to establish, sustain, or retire labs, infrastructure, tools, platforms, and frameworks supporting SoS integration engineering.
  • Mentor and develop technical staff, cultivate career paths in systems of systems and SoS integration engineering, and provide input to talent assessment and staff development planning.
  • Provide differentiated technical contributions directly to sponsors and internal customers, with measurable impact in SoS integration engineering.
