About The Position

Supervises personnel in the installation and maintenance of voice, data, and video network and telecommunications systems. Metro’s mission is to provide a world-class transportation system that enhances the quality of life for all who live, work, and play within LA County.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in a related field or equivalent training from a recognized trade school
  • Three years of relevant experience performing work in the installation and maintenance of communications, computers and related systems
  • Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Class Radiotelephone Operator's License
  • Valid California Class C Driver License
  • Frequent exposure to physical, weather, electrical, mechanical, and chemical hazards
  • On-call 24 hours
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Knowledge of theories, principles and practices of the installation and maintenance of electronic communications and computer systems
  • Knowledge of basic engineering
  • Knowledge of basic PC (Personal Computer) desktop applications, including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs
  • Knowledge of applicable business software applications
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to safety requirements and procedures
  • Knowledge of customer relations
  • Knowledge of job functions of supervised staff
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and monitoring the work of skilled workers installing and maintaining electronic communications and computer equipment
  • Skill in operating and diagnosing electronic communications and computer equipment
  • Skill in utilizing PC desktop applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs
  • Skill in analyzing situations, identifying problems, and recommending solutions
  • Skill in exercising judgment and creativity in making decisions
  • Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Skill in interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Skill in time management
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements

  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the installation and maintenance of microwave, fiber optic, multiplex, two-way radio, telephone, LAN (local area network)/WAN (wide area network), audio/visual, and related network and telecommunications systems
  • Prepares purchase requisitions to procure equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Checks to ensure that service requests, work orders, and job specifications are done in a timely manner
  • Communicates with user departments to ensure proper IT (Information Technology) support is provided, and to notify them of problems and status of work in progress
  • Inspects all work in progress and completed projects
  • Diagnoses complex maintenance problems, initiates repairs, or recommends corrective action
  • Implements preventive maintenance programs for equipment
  • Coordinates and administers technical training programs for staff
  • Instructs subordinates on safety practices and enforces safety regulations
  • Reviews design criteria and specifications for new systems
  • Administers services contracts and ensures they meet standards
  • Keeps log of shift activities, maintains records, and reports for monthly activities and personnel
  • Prepares comprehensive reports and correspondence
  • Supervises, coaches, and motivates subordinates
  • Accounts for subordinates and personal compliance with all of Metro's safety rules, polices, and procedures
  • May be required to perform other related job duties
