Systems Integration Engineer I

Daimler Truck North AmericaPortland, OR
Hybrid

About The Position

As a Systems Integration Engineer I, you will help bring complex vehicle systems to life by supporting the integration, ownership, and verification of electronic control units (ECUs) on heavy-duty trucks. Guided by experienced engineers, you will own a defined set of ECUs while working cross-functionally with feature, systems, supplier, and test teams to ensure software and hardware integrate correctly at the vehicle level. Through requirements-driven development, testing, and issue resolution, you will gain hands-on exposure to real-world vehicle integration challenges and how engineering decisions translate into production performance. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer motivated to build depth in ECU ownership while developing a holistic understanding of vehicle systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Systems, or related field) and 0–2 years of relevant experience, or 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree, is required
  • Foundational understanding of embedded systems, electronics, or software-enabled systems
  • Basic familiarity with systems engineering concepts such as requirements, interfaces, and verification
  • Interest in owning technical scope (e.g., ECUs or components) within a larger system context
  • Ability to analyze technical information, follow structured processes, and document findings clearly
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and work with enterprise engineering and issue-tracking tools
  • An attached resume is required

Nice To Haves

  • Internship, co-op, or project experience involving embedded systems, ECU-level work, systems integration, or testing
  • Exposure to requirements, test management, or issue-tracking tools (e.g., ELM/DOORS, ETM, JIRA)
  • Basic understanding of vehicle networks, CAN communication, or diagnostics
  • Experience supporting ECU, system, or feature testing in lab or vehicle environments (HiL, bench, or vehicle testing)
  • Familiarity with structured development or validation processes
  • Interest in growing from ECU-level ownership into broader feature or system integration responsibility

Responsibilities

  • Own and support a defined set of electronic control units (ECUs), including creating, reviewing, and maintaining system and ECU‑level requirements and coordinating with suppliers to support software delivery
  • Collaborate with system, feature, validation, and test teams to support feature and system integration activities across vehicle platforms
  • Participate in system‑level issue triage by reviewing test results, logs, and vehicle data to evaluate whether system and ECU behavior align with defined requirements
  • Document, communicate, and route feature or integration issues to the appropriate ECU, feature, or test owner, and support tracking through root cause and resolution
  • Create and maintain system‑ and ECU‑level test cases derived from requirements to support integration, verification, and validation activities
  • Support execution, analysis, and tracking of integration and verification testing across multiple environments (e.g., HiL, bench, simulation, and vehicle)
  • Document integration assumptions, ECU behavior, interfaces, and technical decisions to support traceability, knowledge sharing, and cross‑team alignment
  • Update and maintain engineering artifacts in enterprise tools, including requirements, test cases, issues, and reports, in alignment with defined processes
  • Support continuous improvement of integration and test processes by providing feedback and identifying gaps during execution
  • Develop an understanding of vehicle architectures, networks, and embedded software behaviors through hands‑on integration and testing activities
  • Grow technical depth in systems engineering, ECU integration, and validation practices through mentoring, training, and on‑the‑job learning

Benefits

  • annual bonus program
  • 401k company contribution with company match up to 6% as well as non-elective company contribution of 3 - 7% depending on age
  • starting at 4 weeks paid vacation
  • 13+ calendar holidays
  • 8 weeks paid parental leave
  • employee assistance program
  • comprehensive healthcare plans and wellness programs
  • onsite fitness (at some locations)
