About The Position

The Systems Engineer positions will be part of 70-person End User Services and Audio Visual (AV) Collaboration Support team supporting the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), an agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce, responsible for granting U.S. patents and registering trademarks, playing a vital role in fostering innovation, protecting intellectual property, and supporting economic growth. To carry out this mission, USPTO depends on a modern, secure, and highly available information technology environment that supports a geographically dispersed workforce, extensive telework capabilities, and high-demand public-facing systems. The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is central to this effort, delivering reliable, innovative, and secure IT services that enhance productivity, communication, and collaboration for leadership, employees, and external stakeholders. The Systems Engineer positions support the USPTO OCIO mission by providing comprehensive End User Services and Audio Visual (AV) Collaboration Support across enterprise environments, ensuring seamless IT service delivery while advancing modernization and improving the overall user experience. The scope includes support for desktop services across headquarters, regional, and satellite offices, warehouse operations, telework services, and AV and collaboration capabilities, creating a cohesive and resilient IT ecosystem for both on-site and remote users. This project is focused on maintaining reliable operations through the sustainment and enhancement of legacy systems while also enabling modernization through the introduction of innovative technologies and solutions that align with evolving mission needs. The End User Services and Audio Visual (AV) Collaboration Support project supports 12,895 teleworkers in which 96.14% of USPTO employees are teleworking at least one day a week with 11,405 of those teleworkers working from home five days per week. USPTO maintains over 17,800 laptop/desktop computers for employees and on-site support contractors, and over 26,800 printers. The warehouse contains over 190 different IT items with approximately 11,000 serialized items and a total of 20,000 items currently stored. The Systems Engineer positions will deliver user-centric services that improve productivity and collaboration, while ensuring all systems adhere to federal security requirements and best practices to safeguard data and operations. These roles will deliver full lifecycle support, including operations, maintenance, enhancements, and new system implementations, while driving process standardization and automation to increase efficiency and reduce risks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Minimum of 2–10+ years of relevant experience depending on level (Junior, Mid, Senior) supporting IT and/or Audio Visual (AV) systems
  • Hands-on experience with installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of IT and AV equipment and systems
  • Working knowledge of video teleconferencing platforms, AV control systems, and collaboration technologies
  • Experience with hardware/software support including PCs, peripherals, and network-connected devices
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, including schematics, blueprints, and system diagrams
  • Basic to advanced understanding of IP-based networking concepts and system integration
  • Experience operating in Agile or similar team-based delivery environments
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues efficiently
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to support end users and collaborate with stakeholders
  • Ability to support on-site work, including travel within a 50-mile radius of supported locations
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs. and work in physically demanding environments as required
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance or higher

Responsibilities

  • A/V Senior Systems Engineer - AV PROGRAMMER. Performs techniques of professional sound systems and audio equipment, video projection and display systems, audio and video conferencing technologies as well as control systems and IP-based network. Technical understanding of A/V systems and their use, including audio conferencing and video. Responsible for the design, programming, and development of customer integrated control solutions for complex audio-visual systems. Responsible for providing customer with GUI/Panel designs for approval prior to implementation · Responsible for testing, troubleshooting, encoding, and debugging complex audio, video, switching, and control system problems. Performs AMX, Biamp, Cisco, Crestron, and QSC control system programming, implementation and testing for System Integration client projects. Performs Q-SYS Designer DSP programming. Ensure operation of audiovisual equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements. Leads programming code reviews, as required, and resolves field code issues. Contributes to design review and code review, as required. Performs in a supervisory capacity as needed.
  • A/V Junior/Mid Systems Engineer - ON-SITE INSTALLER. experience with maintenance/repair of electro/mechanical devices. Responsible for installing, operating, maintaining and troubleshooting audio video equipment and related components. Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics. Has cabling experience, to include but not limited by, running of low voltage wire for audio video equipment, interactive exhibits and relate network connectivity. Possess good problem-solving skills and be capable of working in a physically demanding environment (lifting in excess of 50 lbs.)
  • A/V Junior/Mid Systems Engineer – VIRTUAL/HYBRID VIDEO TELECONFERENCE TECHNICIAN. Operates video teleconferencing equipment in person and remotely, connected to cloud-based conferencing services, to include: tasks requiring technician to provide assistance to end users in conducting video teleconference sessions in-person, within 50 miles of USPTO Offices, virtual and a hybrid of both, which may include conference/event preparation, and monitoring of VTC equipment and system performance, reporting equipment and network problems to appropriate parties for maintenance or repair.
