About The Position

The Environmental Effects Engineering (EEE) organization at Collins Aerospace is seeking a talented and driven Systems Engineer to support the Nuclear Effects Survivability Team’s efforts. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage across the full product development lifecycle, including pursuit and order capture, requirements definition, system design, software and hardware development and integration, systems test and verification/validation, and deployment. In this position, every day will bring new challenges, and your contributions will directly impact the performance and resilience of mission‑critical defense systems. You will play a key role in ensuring system-level functionality and robustness. The ideal candidate brings prior Systems and Nuclear Survivability experience and will contribute immediately by collaborating across disciplines to troubleshoot issues, analyze data, and implement effective solutions. A motivated engineer will excel here, supported by deep technical expertise and the autonomy to innovate. You’ll be entrusted with meaningful responsibility from day one, directly shaping product robustness and advancing a premier engineering capability. This position is part of a larger team that creates a variety of Environmental Effects for TEMPEST, Nuclear, Electromagnetic Compatibility/Interference (EMC/EMI) and Power Quality qualification testing of Company products and programs to various military and commercial industry standards. The EEE Lab is a world-class, full-service, 18,000 sqft (and growing) Environmental Qualification Test Lab located in Cedar Rapids, IA capable of creating nearly any sub-system environment required in the avionics industry. While EEE reports up through Central Engineering Solutions, they support testing for all Collins Aerospace and Raytheon Technologies as needed. EEE services not only includes a full suite of Climatics, Dynamic, EMI/EMC, Lightning, and TEMPEST test capabilities; our industry experts also offer design support, analysis, test failure troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and much more.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a US DoD Top Secret Security Clearance (Selected Candidate will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements)
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field
  • Experience in developing and managing requirements of varying levels (system, sub-system, line replaceable units (LRUs)).
  • Experience with generating technical documentation, such as test plans, procedures, or technical reports.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using digital engineering tools such as DOORS, JIRA, Subversion, or equivalent for requirements management, configuration control, or workflow tracking.
  • Experience applying Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) methods using SysML in design tools (Enterprise Architect, Rhapsody, Cameo, or equivalent).
  • Experience with evaluating systems using simulated environments.
  • Working knowledge of embedded (low-level) software development, application-level software development, and/or hardware development principles.
  • Understanding of standard development processes, including waterfall and Agile methodologies, and the ability to apply them in an engineering environment.
  • Experience interfacing with internal and external customer, including communicating requirements, presenting technical findings, or supporting design reviews.
  • Experience working in an integration lab, test facility, or in the field, supporting integration and/or verification activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and present technical material clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to manage tasks and meet cost, schedule, and performance objectives with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Develop concepts of operations, requirements, and define system interfaces.
  • Develop and implement test plans, procedures, integration, and verification documentation.
  • Integrate hardware and software mitigations for nuclear environments into tactical systems, evaluating their functionality and impact.
  • Develop integration documentation, execute plans, analyze data, verify requirements and effectively communicate results to leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Conduct statistical and numerical analysis of radiation performance data to ensure optimal system performance and verify requirements.
  • Present technical findings and viable solutions to leadership and customers.
  • Travel as needed (up to 20%) to support mission execution at various locations including local RTX facilities, test sites, vendor facilities, and customer locations.
