About The Position

Motorola Solutions is seeking a Systems Engineer to be responsible for the public safety design and implementation of solutions for Motorola’s ASTRO 25 and adjacent technologies for State and Local government agencies. This is a remote position with travel (25-50%) to support projects in the T4E territory (NC, SC, GA). The role involves leading the technical aspects of assigned projects until system acceptance, working closely with a field team including Project Management, Systems Engineers, System Technologists, Construction Managers, and Customer Service Managers. Projects vary in scope from single-site installations to complex statewide public safety communication systems. The team operates in a high-performance culture with demanding cycle times and high customer expectations due to the mission-critical nature of the communication systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or technical discipline and 3+ years of engineering or technical experience OR 5 years of engineering or technical experience.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required.
  • Radio Frequency Engineering principles.
  • Land / Mobile Radio Engineering principles.
  • RFDS principles to include antenna and cable selection, transmit combiners, receive multi-couplers, and lightning protection systems.
  • P25 Land Mobile Radio terminology and two-way subscriber radio provisioning methods.
  • Servers and related systems to include: VMware ESXI, Linux, and Microsoft operating systems.
  • Construction of remote communication sites to include: site selection, grounding, compound development, tower and shelter requirements.
  • Fortinet and Juniper firewalls, Nokia 7705 series routers, Juniper SRX/MX (Junos) series routers, HP/Aruba and Juniper switches.
  • Remote access using SSH, SCP, SFTP, RDP.
  • Knowledge with point-to-point Microwave systems, Microwave RF & Network design.
  • FCC licensing and frequency search.
  • Software applications integration, Application Protocol Interfaces (API) concepts, computer operating systems, and the OSI model.
  • Networking protocols and devices including RSVP-TE, OSPF, ISIS, BGP, MPLS, SIP, RTP, SNMP, NAT, routers, switches, and stateful packet firewalls.
  • Knowledge of physical layer such as fiber, copper, and microwave.
  • Knowledge of IP networking, network design methodologies & troubleshooting (Ethernet, TCP/IP, L2/L3, MPLS).
  • Works collaboratively and builds relationships with other colleagues, customers, and third party service professionals.
  • Self-motivated, good written and oral communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture is a plus.
  • Certifications a plus through CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, Nokia NRS1, CCNA or similar a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implementation of the radio network including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul and WAN and CEN networks.
  • High level of customer and consultant interaction involving customer design reviews, customer witnessed staging and acceptance testing events, coverage acceptance testing, live system upgrades, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • System buildout, configuration and acceptance testing in both lab staging and field environments.
  • Radio coverage testing, frequency analysis and interference mitigation.
  • Radio system licensing (FCC/Industry).
  • Preparation of system fleet map, encryption and radio programming templates.
  • Complete system documentation.
  • Live system cutovers and upgrades.
