About The Position

The Systems Design Engineer II is responsible for the design, development, and integration of complex components and systems for the SMR-300 power plant. This role requires frequent interfacing with other engineering disciplines and licensing groups as well as independent management of system integration activities, including requirements development, component specification development, engineering calculations, and interface resolution. The Engineer independently executes moderately complex engineering assignments with minimal technical guidance and provides technical support and guidance to less-experienced engineers. The Engineer will be part of a team executing a U.S. Government cost-shared development program requiring efficient completion of engineering assignments.

Requirements

  • BS in an engineering discipline (civil, mechanical, or chemical preferred but not required)
  • Typically 4–6 years of post-graduation engineering experience; an advanced engineering degree may be considered toward relevant experience
  • In-depth knowledge of heat transfer and fluid dynamics fundamentals
  • Demonstrated ability to independently execute moderately complex system design, analysis, or integration assignments with minimal technical guidance
  • Experience developing engineering calculations, system design documentation, technical specifications, and design bases
  • Demonstrated experience developing, managing, and verifying engineering requirements
  • Experience coordinating engineering interfaces across multiple technical disciplines
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal, and effective communication skills
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel
  • Experience working with engineers, manufacturers, and vendors to develop designs, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Experience working in the nuclear energy field
  • EIT and/or PE certification

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Smart Plant, MathCad, AutoCAD, Pipe-Flo, Engineering Life-cycle Management (ELM), requirements management software (e.g. DOORS-NG), and HTRI heat exchanger design software

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform the design, development, and integration of assigned plant systems for the SMR-300 small modular reactor program.
  • Perform and review engineering evaluations, calculations, and analyses related to thermal-hydraulic, mechanical, and process system design.
  • Develop and maintain system design documentation, including system descriptions, design specifications, engineering calculations, technical reports, and design bases.
  • Develop, verify, and manage system requirements and resolve requirements-related issues within assigned technical scope.
  • Coordinate with component, mechanical, civil, electrical, I&C, and licensing engineers to manage system interfaces and resolve cross-disciplinary design issues.
  • Lead the selection, specification, and technical evaluation of plant equipment and components within assigned systems.
  • Prepare and review engineering drawings, models, vendor documentation, and other design deliverables for technical adequacy and consistency with system requirements.
  • Independently identify, evaluate, and resolve moderately complex technical issues through engineering analysis and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead or provide significant technical contributions to design reviews, technical meetings, and cross-functional project activities.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable codes, standards, quality requirements, design bases, and regulatory expectations.
  • Support licensing activities by developing technical information, resolving technical questions, and supporting responses to internal and regulatory requests.
  • Maintain engineering documentation and configuration control throughout the design lifecycle and ensure changes are appropriately evaluated for system and interface impacts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced engineers and support review of their engineering work products.
  • Coordinate assigned engineering scope with project schedules and communicate technical risks, issues, and potential impacts to project leadership.
