About The Position

The Systems Architect is responsible for ensuring that the technology objectives of NMHS are aligned to the business goals. This position is responsible for providing technical and management guidance to all departments. Responsible for assisting with the overall infrastructure design and architecture, to include all of the systems utilized by NMHS. Responsible for creating roadmap, architectural, process, standards and governance documentation. Responsible for assisting with requirements gathering and documentation. At times, responsible for assisting with client and project engagements to document technical requirements for business systems. Responsible for participating in prioritizing, directing, and assigning designated team activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science or health care related field.
  • Relevant equivalent work experience may be substituted for degree
  • Minimum 10 to 12 years as business/technical lead, architecture or engineering role required.
  • Prior experience facilitating transformational change through the use of architectural roadmaps preferred.
  • Prior experience with communicating and promoting the value of systems architecture within an organization preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with all aspects in the lifecycle of managing Enterprise Applications, which includes the design, architect, deployment, maintenance, and upgrade.
  • Ability to look beyond current issues and prepare and plan for long term, end game solutions
  • Ability to abstract key information to empower good decision making by both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to assess and understand the impact of technical decisions and architectural changes
  • Ability to develop plans for implementation of large and complex projects
  • Ability to communicate, teach, and train others (e.g. Application Administrators, Senior Applications Administrators, Applications Engineers, Informatics, customers, vendors) on technical decisions, implementations, projects and roadmaps
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational, presentation, and customer service skills
  • Cost benefit analysis, portfolio management, project management, change management, and strategic planning skills preferred

  • Systems Architect or Cerner related certification and/or training is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide systems architecture and design services which meet and exceed end user (e.g., client, internal customer, etc.) needs, ensuring adherence to established corporate policies.
  • Shows leadership and initiative in Enterprise Architecture & Design department objectives.
  • Accountable for the detailed development and support of product roadmaps.
  • Coordinates and defines business systems roadmap and direction for the Health System to include consulting with end users to determine their future scope and objectives to ensure the infrastructure platform is able to continuously support the growing needs of the business.
  • Oversees the timely and accurate analysis of end user requirements and the delivery of those requirements within our infrastructure and applications.
  • Managing end user expectations to keep them at a realistic level.
  • Works with all groups within the health system to analyze and capture business needs.
  • Evaluates technologies for our system and infrastructure technology strategy.
  • Assists development teams with design, product architecture, build, and implementation.
  • Analyzes technology issues and proposes short, mid and long-term solutions.
  • Assists in ROI analysis of projects involving infrastructure.
  • Ensures processes are followed and assists with process maturity and process documentation.
  • Assists in scalability, capacity planning and systems architecture.
  • Works with other senior technology leaders to propose technical solutions and help craft architecture and technology roadmap.
  • Analyze systems and infrastructure, detecting operational problems and recommending improvements to ensure optimal performance.
  • Analyzes requirements and use cases to determine approach and development strategies.
  • Proactively identifies symptoms and instabilities in a timely and accurate manner to include performing analysis, capacity planning, and testing for organizational systems.
  • Makes recommendations to management on enhancements to infrastructure and applications that will improve the quality and reliability of our systems.
  • Provides recommendations of the most cost-effective solution to management, including all cost, procedural, and contractual considerations necessary to make decisions
  • Researches and identifies new technologies available that offer business advancements
  • Provides written documentation to support the recommendation and benefits of implementing new technology
  • Ensures information is properly protected by assisting Information Security in developing secure architectures.
  • Develops, utilizes and modifies queries, rules and/or applications with the highest complexity and/or widespread system and enterprise impact using vendor or Health System developed technology tools.
  • Develops and peer reviews standard protocols.
  • Provide assistance to assigned co-workers ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provides support by answering questions ensuring functions are efficiently performed in a quality-oriented manner.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to co-workers on best approaches, practices, and lessons learned.
  • Keeps up-to-date on current workflow and department procedures in order to answer questions, provide work direction, or complete tasks.
  • Shows mentorship to assist with development of skills of team members.
  • Effectively communicates and disseminates knowledge to both technical and non-technical team members.
  • Provides departmental support in problem resolution, ensuring issues are resolved in an accurate, timely, and professional manner.
  • May be required to support supervisor in responding to inquiries and conducting research and analysis.
  • Proactively plans support coverage with manager/project manager/lead analyst for periods of unavailability.
  • Actively mentors and trains back-up personnel to assure needed application support coverage, working with manager as needed for planning and resourcing aspects of this responsibility.
  • Allocates and assigns resources for all stages of development, maintenance, and support.
  • Designs and facilitates orientation and training for new team members.
  • Facilitates on-going individual and team education to maintain a solid knowledge base.
  • Provides input to manager for staff performance evaluations and education plans.
  • Supports and works with manager to recognize individual special contributions/areas of excellence as well as work together on opportunities for growth and performance improvement.
  • Coordinate, prioritize, and participate in activities associated with completing assigned projects or project task(s).
  • Appropriately manages priorities and scope to deliver results on time.
  • Consistently provides options and recommendations for solutions based on research, background, and current direction.
  • Effectively manages technical projects when assigned.

  • Follows all steps to close project which may include conducting meetings, completing project reports, and maintaining completed project file.
  • Proactively oversee the activities involved in quality resolution of problems related to area of responsibility.
  • Acts as highest escalation point for troubleshooting systems and determining different levels of action (e.g. short term fixes versus long term fixes, defect versus enhancement, etc.).
  • Responds with a sense of urgency to problems escalated to employee's level.
  • Escalates to supervisor any situation outside the employee's control that could adversely impact the services being provided.
  • Places the highest priority on providing quality end user service by ensuring the unique needs of end user are met.

  • Writes documentation to help describe the purpose and use of features, tools and functionality (e.g. work instructions, user guide, development tips and tricks, processes, etc.).
  • Writes documentation to help instruct engineers and admins on the approach of specific implementations (e.g. solution and tool proposals, technical designs, etc.)
  • Writes documentation for proposals to drive technical decisions such as tool selection, technology selection, etc.
  • Shares these responsibilities and knowledge with any/all team members, and learns from them in return.
  • Provides adequate notification to manager and peers for scheduling out-of-office events to assure proper coverage is in place.
  • Leads negotiations to achieve consensus.
  • Collaborates with leadership to assess, develop, define and improve procedures that support business and clinical technology systems and health system processes.
