About The Position

The primary responsibility of this position is to support the entire Island County organization by managing and maintaining of servers and server-based applications as well as the administration of Active Directory and the County’s Microsoft 365 G3 environment. This position is part of the IT Operations team and collaborates with the IT technical team in the department’s role of providing, maintaining, and securing the County’s business applications and data on the appropriate hardware and software platforms.

Requirements

  • Able to support a 24/7/365 environment as needed.
  • Able to work nights and weekends as scheduled for afterhours activities, including patching and support.
  • Skilled in the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and newer.
  • Skilled in configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and Hyper-V.
  • Skilled in Microsoft System Center suite, including Configuration Manager and Operations Manager.
  • Skilled in the management of Microsoft 365 G3 environments.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure cloud management including sever setup and management
  • Familiarity with Cybersecurity practices and tools.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint online.
  • Skilled in Microsoft PowerShell and command-line scripting.
  • Functional knowledge of configuring and managing storage arrays.
  • Maintain a high standard for accuracy, completeness, and efficiency.
  • Proficiency in the tasks of monitoring operational readiness, maintaining hardware and software configurations, performing upgrades, testing, and troubleshooting systems that are in use by the county.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related technical/business discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • Three years full-time experience in information technology support, including a minimum of one year in systems administration, active directory administration, server hardware maintenance, and operating systems support; or any equivalent combination of experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.

Responsibilities

  • Building physical and virtual servers (both local and cloud based), securing company resources using the latest Cybersecurity best practices, and monitoring for threats and outages.
  • Application support including the coordination and building of vendor relationships; installation, upgrades and patching of software packages, and other support activities including troubleshooting.
  • Administration maintenance functions for all servers, to include storage systems and other server related infrastructure.
  • Maintains Active Directory, including the creation and maintenance of user accounts and security groups and group policies.
  • Management of Island County’s email system, including the management of the spam filter and archive solutions.
  • Analyzes applications, user requirements and processes to improve and automate existing systems and/or infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoots and recovers from hardware or software outages; coordinates and communicates with impacted customers.
  • Plans, designs, and implements server and network projects.
  • Researches and reviews system capabilities and limitations, makes recommendations and manages / coordinates the implementation.
  • Installs new and rebuilds existing servers and configures hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage in accordance with industry standards and project / operational requirements.
  • Manages the IT data backup and recovery system.
  • Collaborates with senior IT staff to establish and maintain various backup procedures and schedules for data residing on the department’s storage systems.
  • Performs daily systems monitoring; verifies the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, system and key processes; reviews and monitors system and application logs and verifies completion of scheduled jobs.
  • Applies OS and security patches and application upgrades on a regular basis; uses imaging tools to image computers, upgrades administration tools and utilities, configures / adds new services, as necessary.
  • Performs ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required including periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning; manages and allocates disk space to servers as needed.
  • Assists with Windows network management.
  • Provides customer service in support of systems, hardware, and software.
  • Implements and monitors appropriate applications and security procedures to safeguard the County infrastructure from physical harm, viruses, unauthorized users, and potential data loss.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the IT Operations Manager and maintain regular attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
