About The Position

Under general supervision, performs professional work assisting in the operation and support of the County’s wide area network. Identifies and installs new software releases and system upgrades, evaluates and installs patches, and resolves software related problems. Maintains data files and monitors system configuration to ensure data integrity. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Assembles and troubleshoots computers, servers, ancillary equipment and software to sustain service level requirements to County organizations. Primary responder for all server hardware and software issues including VMWare and appliances. Expected to research and resolve IT issues in a timely manner. Designs and implements Microsoft Active Directory Schema (a Microsoft network), determines server specific requirements to meet program goals and for secure communications. Anticipates requirements and integrates solutions to achieve specific goals which demonstrating advances skills in configuring server and software platforms. Assists server team with installation and management of Anti-Virus, and patching software for County computers. Monitors systems and other logs daily for security threats and update status. Assembles, installs, and troubleshoots computers, printers, and other equipment; replaces defective parts; repairs and cleans equipment and components; performs preventive maintenance when possible. Performs these tasks to ensure IT meets service level requirements when staff are absent. Maintains, troubleshoots, and expands capabilities of Active Directory and Group Policy. Assists in performs network installation and administration to include operating systems via WSUS (Windows Server Update Services), network cards, and switches. Installs network wiring when required. Performs network/pc support standby on week nights or weekends as required. For the Systems Administrator III role, performs under limited supervision and demonstrates advanced skills in configuring server and software platforms. Attends software demonstrations, evaluates all IT aspects, and makes appropriate recommendations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or a related field
  • 3 years practical experience in computer networks, computer support, software applications (Systems Administrator II)
  • 5 years practical experience in computer networks, computer support, software applications (Systems Administrator III)
  • Holds a Microsoft professional certificate, a basic networking certification, and at least one advanced computer certification current and applicable to the job duties (Systems Administrator II)
  • Holds a top level Microsoft certificate for a modern Microsoft operating system, an advanced networking certification (such as CCNA), and an additional advanced computer certification (such as VMWare, storage, or SQL) current and applicable to the job duties (Systems Administrator III)
  • Acceptable criminal background investigation, including an acceptable applicant fingerprint check
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license
  • Thorough knowledge of latest versions of Windows Server, Exchange, and Microsoft Office
  • Advanced skill in administering Microsoft networks and active directory structures (Systems Administrator II)
  • Expert skill in administering Microsoft networks and active directory structures (Systems Administrator III)
  • Ability to perform quality control and to counsel, supervise, and train assigned staff effectively and objectively.
  • Ability to manage a wide area network and personal computer support.
