The System Protection & Control Technician is responsible for calibrating, installing, maintaining, and repairing protective relays and associated equipment to ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of the Duke Energy Electric Grid. This role requires working in diverse environments including generation plants, transmission switch yards, control houses, and distribution substations, while maintaining a high level of hazard awareness and safe work practices. The technician will maintain, install, repair, and troubleshoot complex control systems, protective relay systems (microprocessor and electro-mechanical), substation and electric utility protection systems, and station automation and SCADA systems. A key responsibility is the accurate reading and interpretation of substation drawings such as single line drawings, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings. The position also involves performing switching and tagging to obtain proper clearances for equipment work. This role includes call-out responsibilities, requiring availability for all hours, day or night, weekends, holidays, and in all weather conditions. Travel and overnight stays to various locations are also required, along with periodic call-outs for power system emergencies.
