About The Position

Kapsch is seeking a System Operator I to join their team. This role involves operating the Traffic Management Center's (TMC) Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) such as CCTV and Variable Message boards, aiding in Traffic Incident Management (TIM), receiving and coordinating responses to roadway concerns, dispatching maintenance crews for snow and ice operations, and creating records for all incidents, roadway concerns, and actions in a call log. New systems Operators are not expected to have strong competency in TMC dispatching. Systems Operator I staff shall, with the support of a Systems Operator II and under the supervision of Systems Operator III, perform these duties.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher; OR Two years of full-time employment meeting the qualifying experience.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication.
  • Proficient in computer/software including MS Office applications and spreadsheets.
  • Capable of working well with co-workers and NYSDOT staff.
  • Proficient in using roadway maps and have basic knowledge of roadway elements.
  • Perform with minimum supervision.
  • Qualifying Experience: Operations dispatching with at least one of the following groups/agencies: Transportation, Fire, Police, EMS, 911, or similar experience in the Military.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively monitor the performance of the highway system, weather and highway conditions.
  • Intercede appropriately, in conformance with TMC Policy and Guidance, to address concerns, deficiencies or conditions.
  • Coordinate the department’s response to identified conditions, including operation of ITS components such as CCTV and Variable Message boards.
  • Communicate and coordinate with department staff and management, outside agencies and first responders.
  • Operate the TMC’s Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) such as CCTV and Variable Message boards.
  • Aid in Traffic Incident Management (TIM).
  • Receive and coordinate department response on roadway concerns.
  • Dispatch maintenance crews for snow and ice operations.
  • Create records for all incidents, roadway concerns, and action in a call log.
