About The Position

The System Engineer applies science, technology, and engineering knowledge to maintain the operability of assigned structures, systems, and components (SSCs) at RH-TRU for the Idaho Cleanup Project at Idaho National Laboratory. The role maintains configuration management and provides oversight of the technical aspects of operations for assigned SSCs, including testing, performance monitoring, walkdowns, system health reporting, and operability evaluations. The engineer integrates safety into engineering designs and is accountable to the RH-TRU Chief Engineer for compliance with DOE Orders, Facility Safety Basis requirements, company procedures, and nuclear-industry best practices. Industrial and commercial practices are used where appropriate in operating and maintaining assigned SSCs. This is a multi-level position. Placement depends on the candidate’s demonstrated depth and breadth of experience and skills. Grade 14 requires a bachelor’s degree; Grade 17 requires a bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant experience. The position is located at Site/INTEC and follows a Monday–Thursday, four 10-hour shifts schedule. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required because the work is performed at a federal facility involving national security.

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other state photo identity card, or an acceptable alternative identification document, is required to access IEC and INL facilities.

  • Maintain the technical baseline of assigned structures, systems, and components (SSCs), including identifying and understanding the documents that make up the technical baseline.
  • Manage the Facility Change process to maintain configuration management of assigned SSCs.
  • Establish preventive maintenance schedules, determine quality-level requirements, ensure spare-part availability, and verify completion of maintenance on assigned SSCs.
  • Evaluate system failure and corrective-maintenance rates and identify trends.
  • Evaluate system performance data and recommend modifications or upgrades to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Perform periodic assessments of assigned SSCs to verify compliance with the design basis.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop waste-processing procedures and troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Develop test plans for new equipment.
  • Support development of system operating procedures.
  • Review and evaluate work-control documents, including repairs, for assigned SSCs.
  • Provide technical support, engineering services, and guidance for assigned SSCs and Waste Management Operations and Projects.
  • Interact with teams, project support groups, subcontractors, vendors, and clients on assigned projects as appropriate.
  • Support emergent issues related to system operability, operations and maintenance, ICP-wide needs, and facility-specific needs.
  • Complete and maintain training for System Engineer Qualification and fulfill the position responsibilities.
  • Develop new processes for sizing and treatment of waste.
