About The Position

The Battle Simulation Center (BSC) System Administrator (SysAd) for Modeling/Simulation Systems reports to and receives work direction from the Project Manager through the local Site Lead. This role involves designing, implementing, and managing a complex local area network for the Battle Simulations Center, supporting daily operations, training events, and exercises. Responsibilities include patch management, change management, system logs, storage area networks, system/network authorization and authentication, security protocols, operating system software and hardware, and user/work-end support. The SysAd will also establish and recommend policies on system use in accordance with DoD information assurance and cyber security policies, provide technical leadership, evaluate hardware/software purchases, administer Red Hat Linux and Windows servers, and support military modeling and simulation systems. Expertise in network and system administration, modeling and simulation, C4I systems integration, and troubleshooting is crucial. The role also includes providing technical instruction, A/V and computer equipment consultation, and immediate on-site IT support. The SysAd will work directly with military and government personnel.

Requirements

  • A degree in computer science/related field, IT-related vocational/technical certification, or two to three years of system administration experience.
  • DoD 8570.1-M IAT Level II or higher required
  • Current, or able to obtain within 3 months of hire, DoD-approved IA baseline certification (CCNA Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, Security+ CE, SSCP)
  • Must possess and maintain training and certifications sufficient to be granted privileged access to Marine Corps information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) through documented completion of required training and certification.
  • Two to three years of system administration experience or related area.
  • One to three years of system administration experience in CentOS/Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Debian-based distribution
  • Experience with Modeling and Simulation virtual and constructive simulation applications and tools
  • Documented experience and a solid understanding of DoD enterprise network policies with a strong security mindset.
  • Experienced and well-versed in USMC and DoD cybersecurity compliance, instructions, policies, and regulations.
  • Must meet DoD 8570.1‐M Information Assurance workforce program requirements for Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II or higher.
  • Well-versed in USMC and DoD cybersecurity compliance, instructions, policies, and regulations.
  • A solid understanding of operating system administration; for example, managing processes and services, configuration of mail systems, system installation and configuration, printer systems, and fundamentals of security.
  • A solid understanding of principles and practice of system configuration management using modern declarative tools; ability to model and reduce complex system requirements as configuration declarations.
  • A solid understanding of fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts; ability to configure file sharing (NFS/SAMBA or Windows); ability to query DNS records; understanding of basic routing concepts.
  • Proficient in Red Hat Linux.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project, and SharePoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with others and senior management.
  • Able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to obtain or have a security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, implements and manages a small, complex local area network for Battle Simulations Center that supports daily operations, training events, and exercises.
  • Establish and recommend policies on BSC/CAST system use and services in accordance with DoD information assurance and cyber security policies.
  • Provide technical lead and supervise system administrators and simulation technicians.
  • Evaluate and recommend Information System hardware and software purchases to support the BSC/CAST training environment.
  • Administer Red Hat Linux and Windows servers and client workstations.
  • Administer military modeling and simulation systems in day-to-day operations and support of military training events and exercises.
  • Provide network and system administration expertise in support of military training events and exercises.
  • Provide modeling and simulation expertise to support the design, implementation, and administration of the simulation and C4I systems in support of military training events and exercises.
  • Provide technical instruction and assistance in day-to-day operations, as well as support military training events and exercises, including on occasion as a member of a mobile training team.
  • Consult on the design, implementation, and administration of modeling and simulation systems integration with C4I systems.
  • Troubleshoot modeling and simulation systems at the engineering level: understand the ports, protocols, and message formats used by the systems to communicate and the tools used to inspect, record, modify, and document system communication.
  • Consult on A/V, computer, and peripheral equipment to support BSC/CAST's day-to-day operations and military training events and exercises.
  • Perform immediate on-site IT support for BSC/CAST's day-to-day operations, and IT support during military training events and exercises.
  • Work directly with military and government personnel to accomplish the work described professionally.
  • Perform other duties related to the work described.
