Synthetic Chemist

Inductive Bio•Boston, MA
•$210,000 - $250,000•Onsite

About The Position

Inductive Bio is seeking an accomplished Synthetic Chemist to build experimental chemistry capabilities for its AI-forward drug discovery platform. The role combines medicinal chemistry strategy with hands-on synthesis expertise to design compounds, solve synthetic challenges, and accelerate Design-Make-Test-Analyze workflows. The Synthetic Chemist will bridge computational design and experimental chemistry, contributing practical synthesis expertise to laboratory work and digital tools. This is an onsite role based in Boston, with regular visits to a local lab. The position reports directly to the VP, Head of Medicinal Chemistry. The role involves collaboration with medicinal chemists, computational scientists, and engineers, as well as oversight of synthesis activities with CRO partners and training and mentoring laboratory technicians.

Requirements

  • Practical, hands-on synthetic chemistry expertise and a passion for advancing medicinal chemistry programs.
  • Deep knowledge of modern synthetic methods and a strong understanding of their practical application at the bench.
  • A track record of solving complex synthetic challenges across diverse chemotypes, reaction types, and scales.
  • Experience mentoring junior chemists or technicians and sharing practical laboratory expertise.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain synthetic strategies and troubleshoot with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated experience managing synthesis CROs, including FTE-based teams and fee-for-service projects across multiple partners.
  • Strategic thinking about material supply, including route optimization, development of key intermediates, and synthesis scale-up.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies and interest in applying AI agents and digital tools to improve synthesis workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience overseeing scale-up synthesis for in vivo toxicology studies or other late-stage drug discovery activities.
  • Experience applying AI, automation, or digital tools to synthetic chemistry workflows.
  • Experience at the intersection of medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry, and experimental drug discovery.

Responsibilities

  • Design, optimize, and troubleshoot synthetic routes across a diverse range of medicinal chemistry programs.
  • Translate practical chemistry knowledge into digital workflows to optimize synthetic routes, identify reaction conditions, streamline CRO communication, and track compound progress.
  • Oversee synthesis activities with CRO partners to deliver high-quality compounds efficiently.
  • Train and mentor laboratory technicians so reactions are performed safely, effectively, and reproducibly.
  • Develop strategies for compound and intermediate supply, including route optimization and scale-up to support medicinal chemistry exploration.
  • Collaborate with medicinal chemists, computational scientists, and engineers to improve how compounds are designed, synthesized, and tested.
  • Help integrate hands-on chemistry expertise with AI-powered tools and workflows for drug discovery.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity-based compensation.
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits, including dental and vision.
  • Opportunity to grow along with a rapidly scaling company.
  • A passionate, kind, and mature team.
