About The Position

Swing Custodians help make Oakland Zoo pleasant and enjoyable for staff and guests by maintaining assigned Zoo grounds and facilities and providing thoughtful, responsive customer service to coworkers, vendors, visitors, and contractors. Two positions are open. The regular schedule is 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. The pay rate is $23.65 per hour; the Zoo states that an offer at this rate will be its best and final compensation offer, in alignment with its compensation philosophy. The role includes cleaning and maintaining restrooms, offices, common spaces, and high-traffic areas; handling waste and supplies; supporting building operations; responding to custodial radio calls; and operating powered cleaning equipment. Custodians receive daily briefings from the department supervisor and team lead and complete assignments according to established standards. There is no supervisory responsibility. The position involves indoor and outdoor work in a range of weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain. Employees must be able to perform physical tasks during 8-hour shifts and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Requirements

Able to safely operate powered equipment normally found in custodial operations.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to meet insurance carrier requirements.
Able to use a computer or tablet to record cleaning dates, times, and completed tasks accurately, and to read, write, and maintain cleaning logs and other required documentation.
Able to engage professionally with guests and coworkers and work around members of the public.
Able to follow cleaning schedules.
Able to read and follow chemical and cleaning-material labels and powered-equipment operating instructions, and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Able to bend and twist; lift and carry 50 pounds; and stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop, and speak regularly during 8-hour shifts.
Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and operate powered equipment typically found in custodial operations.

Nice To Haves

Two or more years of custodial experience.
Knowledge of total hard floor care and carpet care.
Knowledge of general office maintenance.
Certification to operate a boom lift.

Responsibilities

Clean and maintain restrooms, offices, and common spaces by disinfecting, wiping and spot-cleaning surfaces, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning mirrors and windows, leaf blowing, and restocking supplies.
Empty trash and recycling bins, break down boxes, safely use cleaning chemicals, and load, unload, and distribute materials as needed.
Support building operations by moving furniture, servicing high-traffic areas, responding promptly to special cleaning requests, and assisting with general utility work.
Respond promptly and professionally to radio calls about custodial issues.
Maintain a safe working environment and report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
Operate specialized floor-cleaning machines, including auto scrubber-high speed machines, and other cleaning equipment for deep cleaning and upkeep of high-traffic areas.
Work with the department supervisor and team lead to receive daily briefings, understand assignments, and complete tasks efficiently and to established standards.
Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
