About The Position

The Sow Farm Swine Technician is responsible for daily care of animals through implementation of established production procedures. This role involves becoming a skilled employee in animal husbandry to reduce stress of herd and maximize production, learning and developing specialized skills for a smooth workflow, and prioritizing tasks to achieve production targets. The technician will evaluate and recognize signs of health issues, administer vaccinations, power wash and disinfect rooms, and assist with animal movement, heat detection, and artificial insemination. They will also process litters, mark sow cards, manage barn chores including feeding and watering, provide daily input on production and animal health, and maintain PQA+ certification and safety training. Adherence to Animal Welfare policies, bio-security measures, and safety rules is crucial. The position supports the policies, procedures, and values of Passel Farms and industry standards, with regular attendance being essential. Other duties may be assigned to fulfill responsibilities and support team goals.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • Able to work with a variety of personalities and live animals.
  • Regularly required to sit, walk and stand.
  • Able to talk or hear, both in person and by telephone.
  • Able to use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate equipment.
  • Able to reach with hands.
  • Regularly able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, stopping and kneeling.
  • Able to climb ladder.
  • Occasionally need to lift/pull 50 pounds to 100 pounds of force to move an object with or without the assistance of another person.
  • Able to move and work with live animals of various sizes.

Responsibilities

  • Daily care of animals through implementation of established production procedures.
  • Reduce stress of herd and maximize production through animal husbandry.
  • Prioritize and follow task sheets and time frames to achieve production targets.
  • Evaluate and recognize the signs of different health issues and properly care for them.
  • Administer vaccinations and health shots properly.
  • Power wash and disinfect rooms.
  • Shuffle and move animals with limited stress.
  • Assist with heat detection procedures.
  • Assist with artificial insemination.
  • Process litters.
  • Mark the sow cards for breeding, health, etc.
  • Chore the barns, understanding feed system requirements and routine for feeding and watering sows.
  • Provide daily input to Lead person on production and animal health concerns.
  • Maintain PQA+ certification.
  • Complete safety training timely.
  • Follow all Animal Welfare policies and practices and inform management of any violations by staff.
  • Follow bio-security measures according to Bio-Security Policy, including movement of animals, visitor access, sanitation, and disease prevention measures.
  • Follow all safety rules and practices and ensure others do the same.
  • Support, promote, and adhere to policies, procedures, and values of Passel Farms and industry standards.
  • Regular, punctual and consistent attendance is essential for this position.
  • Other duties as may be assigned to fulfill responsibilities of this position and support team goals.
