About The Position

The YMCA of Greater Erie is seeking a part-time Swim Team Coach for its program at the County YMCA. This role is ideal for someone creative, energetic, and fun-loving who enjoys working with children in and around water, and witnessing their learning and development. The position involves assisting the head coach in organizing the swim team program, building team cohesiveness, and instructing participants. Responsibilities include teaching the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of competitive swimming, organizing and directing practice activities, assessing swimmer skills, monitoring participants, and communicating athletic performance to the head coach. The coach will also assist with swim meet strategies, emergency procedures, and maintaining appropriate conduct. Additional duties include assisting with award submissions, parent orientation, registration, and distributing/maintaining important forms. The role also requires attending staff development meetings and other professional activities to enhance coaching skills.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of competitive swimming.
  • Safety Training for Swim
  • Some experience of coaching swimming
  • Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross certification
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen within 60 days of hire
  • New Employee Orientation- YUSA, Mandated Reporter, and child abuse prevention training within 60 days of hire date
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Basic understanding of training and competitive swimming
  • Patience and ability to remain calm when stressed

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a motivational figure who assists in organizing the swim team program to help build team cohesiveness and instruct swim participants.
  • Assist the head coach with instructing students in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Organize and direct individual and small group practice activities/exercises as directed by the head coach.
  • Assess swimmer's skills, monitor participants during competition and practice, and keep the head coach informed of the athletic performance of students.
  • Assist with strategy to conduct a successful swim meet.
  • Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the "safe-in-six" model; complete related reports as required.
  • Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards students, officials, and spectators.
  • Assist the head coach with submitting a list of award winners at the end of the season for annual awards banquet.
  • Assist head coach at parent orientation and registration.
  • Perform support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
  • Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Perform similar and related duties as assigned.
