About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Deck Supervisor, the swim instructor will teach swimming in accordance with the Hubbard Family Swim School (HFSS) standards of safety and excellence and the Teacher Standards. The instructor works with other swim instructors and is immediately responsible for the children’s safety and participation. They are committed to fulfilling all HFSS duties with ethical conduct, community stewardship, individual initiative, and responsive service. The instructor demonstrates leadership, management, and technical skills through effective collaboration, using team resources, progressive decision-making, and personal responsibility. They foster effective communication with other swim instructors, administrative and office staff, parents, and children. This is a generalized job description. It defines the general character and scope of responsibilities. It is not intended to describe and does not necessarily list every duty for a given position.

Requirements

  • At least two years of high school education.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Emotional maturity and enjoyment of water.
  • Ability to instruct in the pool for up to 5 hours per day.
  • Genuine interest in youth character development.
  • Personal acceptance of the four Core Values of HFSS.

  • Communication: The ability to communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing. Professionally and patiently handle incoming requests from customers and ensure that issues are resolved both promptly and thoroughly.

  • Problem Solving: The ability to look beyond the obvious and investigate to determine what things at a micro level need to be addressed, fixed, changed, or enhanced. This includes analyzing information and quickly drawing reasonable conclusions and finding solutions to resolve the basic problems with ease and with minimal guidance from management. Continuously evaluate and identify opportunities to drive system improvements and recommend changes to existing methods and systems to increase the accuracy, efficiency, and responsiveness that positively impact the customer’s/child’s experience.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of experience working with youth, educational classes, swimming, youth programs, recreation, or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in a manner that exemplifies HFSS’s Core Values: Everyone is Family, Do Small Things With Great Love, Whatever It Takes, and Embrace Learning. Displays those qualities in daily life.
  • Know, understand, enforce, and follow all HFSS policies, Swim Instructor Standards, rules, regulations, safety guidelines, and emergency procedures associated with swim lessons, included but not limited to being responsible for swimmers’ safety and whereabouts at all times.
  • Greet swimmers, parents, and staff warmly, developing positive relationships that create raving fans and loyalty.
  • Understand the different HFSS swim levels and prepare for each lesson in accordance with the HFSS curriculum to ensure swimmer success.
  • Teach and demonstrate swimming strokes and skills to participants of different ages, following the HFSS curriculum.
  • Communicate regularly with the Deck Supervisor regarding class structure, lesson plans, student progress, and personal development needs.
  • Test students’ abilities, making recommendations for advancement and placement to the Deck Supervisor regularly. Be prepared for Lane of the Week assessments and aware of each child’s skill level and progress needs.
  • Ensure swimmers achieve level skills in a timely manner.
  • Learn and refer to swimmers by name.
  • Serve as a role model for swimmers and staff, setting a positive example in conversation, personal habits, and attitude.
  • Swiftly and effectively identify, respond and resolve swimmers behavior issues and/or disputes involving swimmers.
  • Keep swim supplies and equipment in good shape; organize and put away teaching equipment; report damaged equipment to the Deck Supervisor; ensure facilities are kept clean, organized, free of litter and safe.
  • Continuously learn and progress toward “expert status” in specific job duties.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
  • Arrive at the pool a minimum of 15 minutes before the scheduled instruction period begins.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties, including but not limited to instructing swim lessons.
  • Flexible with schedule and willing to help coworkers including substituting.
