About The Position

Provides skill-based swimming and water safety instruction to people of all ages and abilities. The instructor maintains constant supervision of students to ensure safety, creates positive and nurturing relationships with students, builds cooperative relationships with parents and caregivers, supports each student's potential, and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the program experience.

The role plans and implements culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate activities consistent with YMCA values; helps develop new approaches to meet participant needs; and follows program, safety, cleanliness, and evidence-based practice standards. The instructor attends staff meetings and training, follows YMCA policies and procedures—including those concerning medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies—and carries out other duties assigned by a supervisor.

The job involves working in and around a pool. Physical demands include lifting equipment and a small- to average-size child, remaining in the pool area and staying alert in a warm environment, recognizing distress signals, supporting a child or adult's body weight in the water, spending one to four hours in water ranging from 80 to 90 degrees, and communicating verbally across distances in normal and loud situations. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 15.
• Obtain basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration certifications, and complete child abuse prevention training, within 30 days of hire.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
• Demonstrated ability to recognize students who may need assistance.
• Demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous and dangerous situations.
• Ability to swim in shallow and deep water and tread water.
• Patience and ability to communicate.
