About The Position

The YMCA of the East Valley is committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Program Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for supporting YMCA operations through effective delivery of programs, services, and member engagement. This position contributes to the achievement of Association goals by promoting the YMCA mission, values, and strategic priorities while providing high-quality service to members, participants, staff, and the community.

Requirements

  • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swimming instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in applicable technology, software, and systems.
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and the YMCA mission.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Maintain acceptable driving record in accordance with YMCA policy.
  • Maintain required automobile insurance coverage.
  • Use reliable transportation for Association business.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in alignment with YMCA mission, policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Deliver high-quality customer/member service to participants, families, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Support departmental and Association goals through effective communication, teamwork, and accountability.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation as required.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and required professional development activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Support risk management and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to support operational needs.
  • Instruct group or individual swim lessons accordance with the Y guidelines, having prepared lessons plans accordingly.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Attend staff meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aids assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
