About The Position

The Detroit SWIMS Swim Instructor shadows and assists with instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy being in the water and want to make a splash with a job at the Y. The position involves preparing swimming lessons according to YMCA guidelines, building relationships with students and parents, conveying information about aquatics programs, and maintaining records.

Requirements

• At minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen from Red Cross
• Obtains YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent at first certification course offered by YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit after hire.

Responsibilities

• Shadows and prepares swimming lessons according the YMCA guidelines
• Builds authentic relationships with students and parents
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules as appropriate
• Maintains records as required and attends staff meetings and trainings
• Performs other assigned duties as directed by Supervisor
• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
