About The Position

North is hiring a software engineer focused on testing to own the test strategy and frameworks used by its engineers. The role is on the Experience team and involves establishing testing patterns, building tooling, and maintaining a fast, balanced test suite. The position currently includes hands-on manual verification as well as automation; engineers continue to test their own work, while this role makes effective testing easier across teams. The position has no fixed level; leveling will be based on experience and the company's engineering ladder. The role is hybrid in New York City, with an office in Dumbo, Brooklyn, where team members typically work 2–3 days per week, or it may be remote within the US.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience as a software engineer focused on testing, test infrastructure, or developer productivity.
  • Strong experience with browser end-to-end frameworks such as Playwright.
  • Ability to write production-quality code in TypeScript and Python.
  • Experience integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Good judgment about what to test, at which level, and what not to test.
  • Experience with manual and exploratory testing, and comfort doing it alongside automation.
  • Pragmatic, informed use of AI coding tools, including for writing and maintaining tests.
  • Clear communication and the ability to raise the quality bar without slowing teams down.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience testing data-heavy or financial applications.
  • Experience with test data management and environment setup.
  • Experience with visual regression or contract testing.
  • Familiarity with FinOps concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Own North's end-to-end test framework and how it runs in CI.
  • Set testing strategy across unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, keeping the suite balanced and fast.
  • Build tooling that helps teams write and maintain tests for the features they own.
  • Strengthen release validation before releases reach customers.
  • Manually verify releases and high-risk changes where automated coverage is not yet sufficient, and use findings to identify what to automate next.
  • Help teams test data accuracy as well as UI behavior.
  • Find and fix flaky tests, turn recurring gaps into framework improvements, and track test-suite health over time.

  • Unlimited PTO.
  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave; birthing parents receive an additional 4 weeks at 50% pay.
