About The Position

The SVP, Commercial Banking Officer provides leadership, direction, and day-to-day oversight for the Bank’s Commercial Lending team. This position coordinates and supervises the lending and business development activities of Commercial Loan Officers, promotes consistent credit practices and ensures compliance with Bank policies, procedures and applicable regulations. The Commercial Banking Officer is also responsible for developing, maintaining and growing an individual commercial loan portfolio, supporting the overall quality and profitability of the commercial loan portfolio, coaching team members and helping the Bank achieve its commercial loan, deposit, fee income and client-retention goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of commercial banking experience, including commercial lending, credit analysis, portfolio management, and business development, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in commercial credit underwriting, loan structuring, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the economic landscape and commercial banking opportunities within Western Massachusetts and neighboring markets preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop commercial relationships, generate growth, and manage a profitable commercial loan portfolio.
  • Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and collaborate effectively across the organization.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to travel freely throughout Western Massachusetts

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supervises the lending, business development, cash management sales, and portfolio manager activities of the Commercial Lending team, including the assignment and prioritization of prospects, loan opportunities, portfolio responsibilities and client coverage.
  • Develops and implements a team business development plan that identifies target markets and attractive prospects, supports disciplined calling activity and creates opportunities to cross-sell Bank products and services.
  • Coaches, develops and supports Commercial Loan Officers and lending associates through regular communication, individual goal setting, pipeline and portfolio reviews, performance feedback, training and career development.
  • Establishes clear production, relationship management, portfolio quality and service expectations for the team; monitors progress against goals and takes timely action to address performance or capacity concerns.
  • Generates new commercial loan, deposit and fee business that supports the Bank’s desired mix of growth, profitability, risk and credit quality. Maintains and grows an individual portfolio of commercial relationships.
  • Builds high-quality relationships with commercial clients ranging from small businesses to larger and more complex organizations. Applies the full range of the Bank’s financing, deposit, cash management and other services to meet client needs and coordinates introductions across the Bank.
  • Provides guidance on loan structure, pricing, underwriting, documentation, and risk mitigation. Reviews loan requests and approves credit within delegated lending authority; recommends larger or more complex requests to the appropriate approval authority.
  • Works collaboratively with Commercial Credit from the inception of a transaction to ensure thorough evaluation of credit risk, appropriate structure and complete, accurate and timely loan presentations.
  • Reviews and presents loan proposals to senior management and the Executive Board of Directors Committee. Responds knowledgeably and confidently to questions and requests for additional information.
  • Coordinates responses to requests from auditors and regulators and actively participates in such meetings as required.
  • Ensures consistent adherence to commercial lending policies, procedures, underwriting standards, approval requirements and applicable laws and regulations. Addresses exceptions promptly and escalates material concerns as appropriate.
  • Monitors the team’s portfolio performance, including financial reporting, covenant compliance, delinquencies, documentation exceptions, collateral deficiencies, risk-rating accuracy, renewals, and emerging credit concerns.
  • Ensures timely identification and management of credit deterioration and problem loans, including appropriate action plans, risk-rating changes, collection strategies and exit strategies, in partnership with Commercial Credit and other Bank resources.
  • Promotes accurate and timely pipeline, portfolio and management reporting. Uses reporting and trend information to manage workflow, anticipate risk and support informed business decisions.
  • Partners with Commercial Loan Operations, Commercial Credit, Cash Management Operations, Retail Banking, and other departments to provide a coordinated client experience and efficient execution from prospecting through closing and ongoing relationship management.
  • Supports effective use of the Bank’s commercial lending systems and processes, identifies opportunities for improvement and champions changes that strengthen efficiency, accountability, data quality and the client experience.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with external loan programs and community partners, including governmental and quasi-governmental resources, to expand financing options and support clients when appropriate.
  • Contributes to the development of the Bank’s Strategic Plan and aligns Commercial Lending Team goals, staffing priorities and business development activities with the Bank’s strategic objectives.
  • Participates in product, policy and process development to help ensure the Bank’s commercial offerings remain competitive, relevant, and appropriately controlled.
  • Represents the Bank at business, community, and networking events to strengthen the Bank’s visibility, develop referral sources, and support the communities it serves.
  • Demonstrates and reinforces the Bank’s core values, promotes collaboration and accountability, and fosters a welcoming, respectful and high-performing team environment.
