About The Position

Uncommon Schools seeks an accomplished, passionate Suzuki Strings Instructor to join our faculty. This position is part of a growing program dedicated to developing musical talent in K-12 scholars. The instructor will focus on middle school scholars with at least two years of instrument experience, teaching small group lessons and ensemble classes. Responsibilities include preparing students for performances, NYSSMA Solo Festivals, and auditions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music in Music, Music Education, or Performance.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Suzuki Method.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient playing up to and through Suzuki Book 3 on Violin, Viola and Cello.
  • Proficient playing up to and through Suzuki Book 1 on Double Bass.
  • Ability to read in Treble, Alto and Bass Clefs.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid State Certification is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Proficiently play up to and through Suzuki Book 3 on Violin, Viola, and Cello.
  • Proficiently play up to and through Suzuki Book 1 on Double Bass.
  • Read music in Treble, Alto, and Bass Clefs.
  • Implement Suzuki method instruction and activities to meet music-specific academic standards.
  • Develop music literacy lesson components related to teaching rhythm and pitch notation, solfege reading and singing, improvisation, and composition.
  • Collaborate with Enrichment teachers and Director of Operations to plan for multiple performances throughout the school year.
  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards.
  • Support school instructional and cultural needs, including academic teaching coverage, test proctoring, daily systems duties, and additional supportive duties.
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development, department activities, and school-wide functions.
  • Develop strong classroom management skills congruent with Uncommon Schools' system of management.
  • Be accountable for students’ mastery of musical standards.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Participate in an annual three-week staff orientation and training.
  • Direct large group instruction with violins.
