About The Position

CEM Corporation is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Sustaining Engineer II to provide technical support for existing scientific instrumentation, troubleshoot complex manufacturing and field issues, and drive product improvements that enhance reliability, quality, and manufacturability. The role offers the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams, lead technical investigations, and contribute to the continuous improvement of scientific instruments. The engineer leads investigations and root-cause analysis of complex or recurring field and manufacturing failures, defines and validates corrective actions, and owns assigned actions through documentation, engineering change approval, implementation, and effectiveness verification. The role also qualifies component redesigns, substitutions for obsolete parts, and cost-reduction changes, and directs failure analysis of returned units and components. The position independently develops and revises Creo models, drawings, bills of materials, assembly procedures, and technical instructions. It coordinates engineering change packages and implementation with Manufacturing and related functions; designs and validates electro-mechanical test and assembly fixtures; improves production test methods; and develops test plans, acceptance criteria, and documented engineering conclusions. The Sustaining Engineer II leads resolution of complex assembly and test problems while balancing quality, safety, manufacturability, and schedule. The role supports product and engineering-change transfers into production, partners with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Field Service, and other disciplines, and provides technical guidance and informal mentoring to less experienced engineers and technicians.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 5–8 years of hands-on experience in manufacturing, production engineering, or sustaining engineering.
  • Demonstrated independent troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, design validation, and corrective-action execution.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD.
  • Experience with engineering change control, technical documentation, component qualification, and production test processes.
  • Strong cross-disciplinary collaboration, project coordination, and written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct failure analysis of returned units and components and communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Independently develop and revise Creo models, drawings, bills of materials, assembly procedures, and technical instructions.
  • Coordinate engineering change packages and their timely implementation with Manufacturing and related functions.
  • Design and validate electro-mechanical test and assembly fixtures and improve production test methods.
  • Develop test plans, establish acceptance criteria, analyze results, and document engineering conclusions.
  • Lead resolution of complex assembly and test problems while balancing product quality, safety, manufacturability, and schedule.
  • Support transfer of new products and engineering changes into production, including test readiness, fixtures, documentation, and training.
  • Partner with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Field Service, and other disciplines to prioritize and execute product improvements.
