AASHE’s Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™️ (STARS®️), developed by the higher education community through an inclusive process, provides a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. An institution’s STARS score is based on the percentage of applicable points earned in credits across four main categories: Academics, Engagement, Operations, and Planning & Administration, with recognition for sustainability leadership at the reporter, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum levels. The report empowers campuses to establish a baseline for sustainability achievements, enables meaningful comparisons over time and across institutions using a common set of measurements, and facilitates planning for long-term sustainability goals through engagement of the entire campus community.
