About The Position

The Sustainability Learning Spaces Manager works in close collaboration with campus partners and subject matter experts to provide opportunities for sustainability-focused learning on Wake Forest University's campus. The Manager maintains existing locations, such as the Campus Garden, and develops and coordinates maintenance of new spaces that offer opportunities for learning, engagement, and research for sustainability. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of non-immigrant or immigrant visa status through Wake Forest University. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in agroecology, horticulture, environmental education, environmental science or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional agriculture or garden experience
  • Experience in environmental education and/or delivering educational programs
  • Demonstrated interest in and advocacy for sustainability-related issues
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and organize workflow, and coordinate activities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with faculty, staff, administrators, and students
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work beyond the standard workday, including nights and weekends, for deadlines, educational and outreach programs, and special events

Responsibilities

  • Use horticultural knowledge to oversee and maintain the Campus Garden: Employ ecologically responsible agriculture principles and practices to design and maintain annual and perennial plantings for sustainability education in the educational garden on campus. Though the Coordinator may partner with colleagues at Reynolda Gardens, this position is not responsible for maintaining any portion of Reynolda Gardens.
  • Work with Facilities, Real Estate, and Planning departments to maintain aesthetics surrounding the garden, including but not limited to, the tool shed, garden house, outdoor classroom, parking and entry spaces, and signage.
  • Train and oversee student workers to perform work in the Campus Garden and enable them to lead volunteer sessions for members of the campus community.
  • Lead educational sessions and tours for members of the campus community.
  • Develop and implement a crop plan that supports sustainability learning outcomes.
  • Coordinate a harvest delivery process with Campus Kitchen partners.
  • In partnership with Facilities, Real Estate, and Planning, Reynolda Gardens, and other appropriate campus partners, develop and manage on-campus sites for learning, engagement, and research for sustainability. Examples include study of stormwater management, regenerative agriculture, managed wetland ecosystems, urban and suburban forest canopies, urban and suburban riparian systems, and spaces where climate mitigation and adaptation solutions are demonstrated across campus.
  • Develop a regular cadence of monitoring sites for safety, invasive species removal, signage, and other appropriate design and maintenance standards to support demonstration and learning.
  • Create design standards, maintenance plans, and space reservation guidelines.
  • Facilitate sustainability-related class tours and engagements at each site.
  • Create educational signage, maps, and other learning prompts and materials that encourage self-guided, interactive learning at each site.
  • Collaborate with Office of Sustainability staff to support education and engagement programs and events, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Office of Sustainability staff to contribute to the website, social media, and other regular communications, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other WFU offices to create an inclusive and welcoming environment in all learning spaces.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
