About The Position

Arcadis is seeking an experienced sustainability, environment, and community lead to join their expanding team in Western Canada. This role is for a senior practitioner with a proven history of delivering environmental, sustainability, and socio-economic outcomes on large and complex infrastructure projects within the marine, ports, coastal, heavy civil, roads, rail, and transit sectors. The specialist will support the ESDC lead during Engineering Services During Construction (ESDC), overseeing projects from design completion through construction and final certification. Based with the site team, the role supports a field-based supervision group and acts on behalf of the Engineer of Record to ensure environmental, sustainability, and community requirements from the design are maintained during construction. This is not a client, owner's engineer, or contractor compliance function.

Requirements

• A minimum of 15 years of experience in environmental, sustainability, or socio-economic practice, including substantial exposure to major infrastructure, transportation, energy, or resource projects in Canada.
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geography, planning, engineering, social science, or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience applying environmental management plans, permit conditions, and mitigation measures in a construction environment.
• Experience leading socio-economic and impact assessment work for federal or provincial review processes, including Gender Based Analysis Plus.
• Proven record of engagement with Indigenous communities on infrastructure or resource projects, carried out with cultural competence and sustained trust.
• Working knowledge of British Columbia environmental assessment conditions, federal fisheries and navigation requirements, and port and municipal approval processes.
• Familiarity with recognized sustainability and climate disclosure frameworks, and experience preparing or verifying external sustainability reporting.
• Experience with economic impact modelling, including input and output methods used for regional and provincial analysis, is an asset.
• Experience on marine, in water, or waterfront construction, and an understanding of the constraints those settings impose, is preferable.
• Strong working command of the Microsoft Office suite, in particular Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams, and comfort with building and maintaining registers and trackers.
• Strong technical writing, with evidence of authorship on regulator-facing or externally published documents.
• Ability to prioritize daily tasks, manage time well, multitask, and troubleshoot while handling several deadlines at once.
• Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written, with credibility at site level and at executive level.
• Eligibility to work in Canada.
• A valid driving licence.
• Ability to meet site health and safety, orientation, and personal protective equipment requirements on an active construction site.

Nice To Haves

• A master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
• Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credential from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, or willingness to obtain the credential within the first six months in the role is value added.
• Certified Environmental Practitioner (EP) designation with ECO Canada, or an equivalent professional credential, is preferred.
• Previous experience working on construction sites is preferable.

Responsibilities

• Act for the Engineer of Record on environmental, sustainability, and community matters during construction.
• Confirm that environmental commitments, mitigation measures, and design assumptions in the issued for construction documents remain valid in the field.
• Assess proposed design changes, field variations, and contractor alternatives for their environmental and community consequences before a position is issued.
• Review contractor method statements, submittals, and technical queries from an engineering standpoint where permit conditions or environmental management plans constrain the works.
• Advise discipline teams when a proposed method departs from the basis of design.
• Provide engineering input for client reliance on regulatory correspondence and condition compliance reporting.
• Lead the sustainability scope, applying the Envision framework, assembling credit evidence from design and engineering disciplines, and maintaining carbon, materials, and resilience data.
• Coordinate socio-economic, Indigenous, and community input into engineering decisions.
• Support the client in honoring commitments recorded in the assessment.
• Work with the interface manager to manage environmental and sustainability requirements as engineering interfaces.
• Coordinate specialist subconsultants supporting this scope.
• Contribute to the ESDC work program and monthly reporting.
• Mentor junior and intermediate practitioners.
• Maintain a high standard of field conduct and reporting quality.
