Sustainability, Efficiency, and Resilience Field Engineer
About The Position
The Sustainability, Efficiency, and Resilience Field Engineer supports the Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) Maintenance Operations by installing, servicing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Sustainability, Efficiency, and Resilience (SE&R) systems across correctional facilities. The role performs professional engineering work that includes evaluating and commissioning HVAC building automation, water management, and electrical metering systems, supporting regional maintenance personnel, and applying engineering principles to ensure code compliant operation of energy related infrastructure within the Department of Adult Correction.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution OR An equivalent combination of education and experience
- May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
Nice To Haves
- Demonstrated experience installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, or maintaining HVAC building automation, water management, or electrical metering/monitoring systems, such as system startups, device installation, and code‑compliant configuration.
- Proven experience diagnosing complex electronic or metering systems using engineering principles and responsive analysis techniques, e.g., troubleshooting multi‑variable system interactions.
- Documented experience working with ethernet‑based networking systems relevant to building automation, monitoring platforms, or connected mechanical/electrical equipment.
- Demonstrated experience interpreting engineering/technical plans or system documentation when evaluating installations, modifications, or system performance in operational facilities.
Responsibilities
- Install, commission, service, and troubleshoot HVAC building automation systems, water management systems, and electrical metering/monitoring systems in accordance with applicable codes and standards
- Perform conduit and raceway installation, wire pulling, device installation, and system startups for SE&R related mechanical, electrical, and plumbing metering infrastructure
- Support regional and institutional maintenance personnel by diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining complex electronic based metering and automation systems across multiple facilities
- Complete work orders and process requisitions, direct billing, and purchasing documentation for SE&R system materials and supplies
- Evaluate technical conditions, troubleshoot system performance issues, and apply engineering concepts to ensure energy conservation, operational efficiency, and compliance with standards
- Participate in project related planning, consultation, and problem solving that involves technically complex systems with multiple variables and inter-dependencies
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, contractors, and facility staff to coordinate SE&R system work activities across assigned correctional institution
