About The Position

The Sustainability Analyst, Circular Resources works as part of ASU's University Sustainability Practices team. The primary responsibility of this role is to lead the collection and analysis of ASU's campus sustainability information, specifically waste and circular resources data. This data is used to inform internal program improvements and for submission to numerous reporting frameworks used for benchmarking and communicating sustainability in higher education. The role will also support project implementation to advance ASU's sustainability commitments.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and one (1) year of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Quantitative reasoning skills and the ability to comprehend, synthesize, benchmark and analyze sustainability data.
  • Basic knowledge of sustainability best practices, including: energy, waste, transportation, systems thinking, outreach strategies and societal sustainability.
  • Basic financial skills to track transactions and budget expenditures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Experience with, and aptitude for, technology and software.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work both as a team leader and member, and complete multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to build, foster and maintain positive professional relationships.
  • Experience in using organizational skills, time management and sound judgment.
  • Able to discern trends and patterns in data and identify relationships between interconnected metrics.
  • Ability to be open-minded about receiving feedback and candid in providing direct, constructive feedback to others.
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible in the workplace to respond effectively to work conditions if plans don’t go as originally organized.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills including but not limited to: quantitative and qualitative data analysis, policy analysis, effective and efficient problem solving.
  • Experience in strategic planning, project management, team management and partnership building.
  • Experience in building and working effectively with diverse stakeholder groups and interdisciplinary teams in a cross-matrixed (versus hierarchical) environment.
  • Experience developing proposals for funding of projects.
  • Experience translating complex sustainability topics to diverse audiences.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of ASU campuses and buildings.
  • Evidence of a graduate degree in sustainability, environmental studies, engineering, statistics, business administration, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with higher education organizational structure.
  • Experience in development and submission of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s Sustainable Tracking and Reporting System (AASHE STARS) report.
  • Experience in data visualization software.
  • Experience utilizing AI in the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the collection and analysis of campus-wide waste and circular resources metrics.
  • Assist in developing institutional solid waste dashboard.
  • Perform waste characterizations and analysis to improve programs.
  • Manage internal communications to gather information and to complete external sustainability reports.
  • Participate in strategic planning work and manage analysis of waste metrics to guide the implementation of circular resources programs.
  • Collaborate with other units who own data and maintain existing data.
  • Critically analyze, evaluate, and recommend changes to university-wide programs to advance sustainability at ASU.
  • Manage student workers from various disciplines to help research, design, test and implement solutions, and run programs.
  • Establish and maintain relationships across the university to advance sustainability goals.
  • Create written communications, presentations and reports for, and to present to, students, faculty, staff, senior executives, donors and the public.
  • Support select annual sustainability outreach events.
  • Assist with zero waste operations as needed, which may include: operating vehicles, loading and unloading trucks and handling a variety of recyclable materials.
  • Represent university sustainability programs to the university community and the public as directed.
