About The Position

Sustain SU is the University of Alberta Students’ Union’s arm of sustainability, providing students with opportunities to develop leadership and sustainability skills. They offer various programs including a sustainable market, a Bike Library & Workshop, a blog team, an events team, and a campus Thrift Store. This intake is for Senior Volunteers (Sustainable Leaders) for the Special Events Team and the Thrift Store Team for the Fall and Winter terms. These roles involve assisting the Sustain SU Coordinator, managing junior volunteers (Eco Ambassadors), and developing volunteer management and leadership skills. The positions require a commitment of 5-7 hours per week from late July through April, including bi-weekly and monthly meetings, and shifts running the teams. An in-person interview is required between July 15th - 24th, followed by an orientation. The Special Events Team plans external events to engage the campus community in sustainability and volunteer appreciation events. The Thrift Store Team helps run the on-campus thrift store, SUBsprout, involving sorting, organizing, inventorying donations, and staffing store opening shifts. Availability on Wednesdays and Thursdays is strongly preferred for the Thrift Store Team. Volunteers will attend mandatory training sessions at the start of the term covering programs, communication, attendance, and professional skills.

Requirements

  • Commitment of 5 - 7 hours per week, late-July through April.
  • Attend bi-weekly and monthly meetings.
  • Attend an in-person interview between July 15th - 24th.
  • Attend mandatory orientation sessions: July 27th - July 30th for Special Events Team, August 4th - 7th for Thrift Store Team.
  • Availability on Wednesdays and Thursdays is strongly preferred for the Thrift Store Team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Sustain SU Coordinator in hiring and running the Eco Ambassadors (junior volunteers).
  • Learn volunteer management skills and leadership skills.
  • Attend bi-weekly and monthly meetings.
  • Work shifts running the actual team.
  • Plan external events designed to engage the campus community in sustainability.
  • Plan volunteer appreciation events for the team of roughly 80 volunteers.
  • Sort, organize, and inventory donations for the thrift store.
  • Prepare for and staff store opening shifts (Sprout Ups).
  • Run sorting shifts with a team of Eco Ambassadors.
  • Take on the role of “on shift manager” during weekly Sprout Ups.
  • Attend training sessions on programs, communication, attendance, and professional skills.
