About The Position

The Phoenix Center at Auraria (PCA) serves students, staff, and faculty associated with University of Colorado Denver, Community College of Denver, and Metropolitan State University Denver. The PCA provides free and confidential resources and assistance to survivors of interpersonal violence (relationship violence, sexual violence, and stalking), as well as their friends, families, and concerned others. The PCA support services include academic advocacy, assistance reporting to the school and/or law enforcement at the survivor’s request, safety planning, court accompaniment, emotional support, and more. The PCA also provides campus education and training, awareness raising events, and campus policy guidance. This position addresses the needs of students, faculty, and staff on the Auraria campus who have experienced sexual violence, stalking, and relationship violence, through providing confidential advocacy services, crisis intervention, and referrals. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Advocacy Services for the Phoenix Center at Auraria (PCA). The Survivor Advocate is responsible for providing, direct victim advocacy services in-person and via Zoom, on the helpline, and during on-scene response (responding to university offices and facilities during business hours) to any and all survivors of interpersonal violence (relationship violence, sexual violence, and stalking).

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology, social science, student affairs, social work, gender and women’s studies, public health, human services, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • 1 year of demonstrated experience providing advocacy support, case management, and/or crisis intervention to survivors of interpersonal violence or trauma
  • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Required to have a driver's license and valid insurance (per our DVP grant) in case the advocate needs to attend court or accompaniment of any kind.
  • Position requires rotating after-hours on call shifts for the 24/7 helpline, and some attendance at after-hours events for advocacy support.
  • Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrate an exceptional understanding of access and engagement with a commitment to developing equitable practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cause of supporting survivors and ending interpersonal violence

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience integrating theories of intersectionality and cultural competence in trauma response services
  • Experience with training volunteers
  • Bilingual (Spanish) fluency

Responsibilities

  • Provide advocacy, resources, safety planning, emergency assistance, case management, and support to victims/survivors of interpersonal violence
  • Provide resources and referral information regarding judicial, legal, medical, law enforcement, therapeutic, and academic services available to victims/survivors of interpersonal violence
  • Provide assistance to victims/survivors of interpersonal violence including navigating and negotiating campus service areas such as academic and student affairs units, academic accommodations, escort and safety services, law enforcement investigations, Title IX/student conduct, discipline processes, and other related university policies
  • Provide education and information regarding the dynamics of relationship violence, sexual violence, and stalking
  • Assess immediate needs and provide appropriate referrals and warm handoffs
  • Complete all necessary documentation up to and including inputting data into the case management system
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Advocacy Services with training for and serve on the 24/7 helpline
  • Other duties as assigned
