2027 Intern - Survivability Engineer

Northrop Grumman•Palmdale, CA
•$22 - $48•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman is seeking Survivability Engineer interns for Summer 2027. The internship is fully on-site in Palmdale, California. Interns will gain exposure to developing, delivering, and maintaining survivable systems, applying classroom knowledge of physics and scientific principles to low-observable engineering from clean-sheet design through sustainment. Depending on business needs, interns may support signature design, modeling, and analysis in electromagnetic/radio frequency, infrared, visual, or acoustic spectrums; RF measurement and testing; liaison engineering; materials and processes; or mission systems design, integration, and test. Work may also include coordinating with design and supportability engineers, developing technologies to reduce detectability, using analytical codes and virtual models, planning and executing RF tests, analyzing test results, and coordinating with suppliers and vendors. The internship requires availability for at least 10 weeks at 40 hours per week during Summer 2027. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program and graduate after August 2027. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance and program special access; U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college or university, with graduation after August 2027.
  • Major in Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or another related STEM field.
  • Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during Summer 2027.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance and program special access within a reasonable period, as determined by the company; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • The stated intern pay range is $21.50–$39.00 per hour for undergraduates, including graduating students planning to attend or enrolled in a full-time master's program for Fall 2027, and $30.50–$48.00 per hour for master's students.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of or experience in one or more Survivability sub-disciplines and spectrums (RF, IR, visual, or acoustic), including design and analysis, measurement, integration and test, mission systems integration, or liaison engineering.
  • Experience working across engineering disciplines to establish requirements and develop a balanced design that meets customer mission objectives.
  • Experience with one or more CAD tools, such as CATIA or NX.
  • Programming or scripting experience in Python, C/C++, MATLAB, or another language.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance or higher.
  • Overall cumulative GPA of 3.25/4.0 or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Support component- and system-level signature design, modeling, and analysis in electromagnetic/radio frequency, infrared, visual, and/or acoustic spectrums.
  • Support RF measurement and testing (Tiers 0–3), including post-test data analysis.
  • Provide liaison engineering support to technicians, including job inspections, defect disposition and guidance, and all-up system assessments.
  • Support materials and process development, testing, and application.
  • Support mission systems design, integration, and test.
  • Coordinate with designers and supportability or maintainability engineers to ensure components and systems comply with Survivability requirements.
  • Develop and integrate advanced technology to reduce system detectability.
  • Implement and manipulate analytical codes; build and analyze virtual models; optimize designs; troubleshoot issues; and perform trend analysis.
  • Design, plan, and execute RCS/RF tests (Tiers 0–3), including defining test requirements, selecting methods and measurements, operating and maintaining equipment, conducting setup and test events, and delivering pre- and post-test reports.
  • Analyze component and system test results and recommend materials, capabilities, and other aspects of Survivability performance.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and vendors on material, technology, and equipment design, delivery, implementation, and testing; develop requirements, write statements of work, provide engineering oversight, and track and report performance.
