About The Position

The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking a Surveyor II or Senior Surveyor for its Billings District. This role involves advanced technical and professional field survey work. The Surveyor II acts as a party chief, reviews survey data for accuracy and validity, and maintains equipment. The Senior Surveyor plans and executes professional survey projects, analyzes evidence for boundary determination, stakes and documents property boundaries, ensures quality and compliance with standards, performs complex calculations and drafting, trains field crews, and oversees survey equipment operations. The Senior Surveyor is responsible for all survey work performed under their Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license. Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or a related field from an accredited college or university (for Surveyor II)
  • Related degrees must include significant coursework in survey-related math, drafting, and surveying techniques, principles and practices
  • Minimum of 2 years of survey experience (for Surveyor II)
  • Two years of progressively responsible professional land survey experience (for Senior Surveyor)
  • Certification as a Land Surveyor Intern, per 37-67-326, MCA (for Surveyor II)
  • Registration as a Montana Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) is required (for Senior Surveyor)

Responsibilities

  • Performing advanced technical and professional field survey work

  • Providing training to field survey crews
  • Coordinating the operation and maintenance of survey equipment within the Unit
  • Overseeing all survey work being performed under their PLS license
