About The Position

HDL Engineering Consultants, LLC (HDL) is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented Survey Technician to join our surveying and mapping department. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside seasoned Professional Land Surveyors and Certified Federal Surveyors on diverse projects in Alaska, providing valuable experience and mentorship. The position involves operating survey instruments, collecting field information, conducting field quality control, performing limited office reductions, and handling survey computations, contributing meaningfully to projects.

Requirements

  • UAA Geomatics student in 3rd or 4th year eager to get hands-on training and experience, with the possibility of transitioning into a full-time role
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License and a clean driving record
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Alaska
  • Good physical fitness, capable of working safely and efficiently in various Alaskan terrains

Nice To Haves

  • Have or plan on taking the Fundamentals of Surveying Certification (FS)
  • A willingness to learn all aspects of surveying, including; control, topographic, boundary, aerial (drone) and right-of-way surveying

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an survey technician on a two-person field survey crew
  • Engage in primarily fieldwork, but may include some office work, contributing to control, boundary, subdivision, topographic & design surveys, as well as aerial mapping control and aeronautical surveys
  • Operate survey measuring instruments, including digital levels, GPS equipment, and total stations, with precision
  • Take accurate and clear field notes and sketches
  • Understand and identify sources of measurement errors
  • Complete mathematical calculations and check field data in the field under the guidance of the party chief
  • Perform data reduction, field note reduction, calculations, data checks and staking computations using survey programs and AutoCAD
  • Support the project surveyor with office tasks such as research, data reductions, equipment organization, and scanning field notes
