About The Position

This position involves performing routine surveying work on a survey crew, providing surveying support with various equipment, and expediting survey progress. The role includes setting out and removing traffic control devices, clearing obstacles, operating survey instruments, setting stakes, performing various types of surveys (construction, design, monitoring, monument perpetuation), making calculations, creating sketches and field notes, and processing survey data. The technician will also use other survey equipment and CAD/computer programs, maintain instruments and equipment, and operate City Vehicles. This role requires the ability to perform physical labor, work in traffic, and potentially work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Requirements

Six months of paid, full-time equivalent work experience on a survey party engaged in land surveying and/or civil engineering.
Six or more units of coursework in land surveying or other related coursework such as civil engineering, geology/earth science, construction management, or Geographic Information System (GIS) (proof required).
Ability and willingness to work in and around heavy traffic and construction sites.
Ability to pass a TSA background check sufficient to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) and/or Secure Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge within the probationary period.
Ability to perform the physical labor involved in surveying, including repetitive or continuous stooping, twisting, kneeling, walking, standing, lifting/carrying 25 lbs, outside in mild to harsh weather conditions.
Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
A valid driver's license must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of the selection interview.

Nice To Haves

Experience with preliminary, topographic, construction, boundary and control surveys.
Familiarity with total stations, data collectors, computers, and computer applications such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, Trimble Business Center, MicroStation/InRoads, or other related software.
Familiarity with global positioning system (GPS) receivers.
Familiarity with construction staking, design surveys.
Familiarity with Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and other surveying systems.
Possession of California Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) or California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
Bilingual skills (Spanish, Khmer, and/or Tagalog) are desirable.

Makes survey calculations, sketches, and field notes.
Downloads, processes, and uploads survey data.
Uses other survey equipment or CAD/computer programs.
Cleans and cares for instruments, tools, vehicles and office spaces.
Operates City Vehicles incidental to primary assignment.
Performs other related duties as required.
