About The Position

Halton Region is seeking dedicated, forward-thinking, and enthusiastic individuals to join their Public Works team. This role supports Regional infrastructure projects by collecting, processing, and delivering survey data for planning, design, construction, operations, and asset management activities. The successful candidate will operate advanced survey equipment and technologies to produce accurate and reliable survey deliverables while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and professionalism. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and detail-oriented, with a commitment to delivering high-quality work through initiative, accountability, sound judgment, continuous learning, and effective collaboration. This position is eligible for the Hybrid Work Program, with a minimum requirement of three (3) days per week onsite. The Region will consider the education, qualifications, and experience of applicants when determining hiring at either the Survey Technician or Survey Instrument Technician level. Candidates selected for an interview will be required to complete a technical competency assessment.

Requirements

Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, or a related field.
Survey Technician candidates must have the minimum experience of a related co-op placement.
Survey Instrument Technician candidates must have a minimum of two (2) years of direct surveying experience.
Certified with, or eligible for certification through, the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).
Demonstrated knowledge of survey theory, practices, procedures, and standards.
Experience operating modern survey equipment including GPS/GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and data collection systems.
Strong understanding of survey calculations, coordinate systems, elevations, control networks, and field procedures.
Demonstrated initiative, accountability, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while consistently producing accurate, high-quality work.
Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety.
Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence in good standing.
Ability to operate a Regional vehicle.
Driver's abstract and proof of licence required upon hire.
The successful candidate must provide a current and acceptable Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

Working knowledge of Carlson Survey software or comparable survey processing software.
Experience with municipal infrastructure projects.
Experience supporting engineering design, construction, utility coordination, or asset management initiatives.
Experience with LiDAR technologies, including terrestrial scanning, mobile mapping or UAV-based data collection and processing.
Demonstrated interest in emerging survey technologies and professional development.

Responsibilities

Support the Survey Crew Chief in the planning and execution of survey projects for Regional infrastructure, construction, operational, and asset management initiatives.
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot survey equipment including GNSS/GPS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, data collectors, and associated software.
Collect, process, and document survey data in accordance with departmental standards and project requirements.
Establish and verify survey control, perform field measurements and calculations, and assist in the interpretation of survey data.
Perform quality control reviews of survey data, calculations, coding, and deliverables, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established standards.
Prepare and maintain field notes, survey files, project records and related documentation in accordance with departmental procedures.
Adhere to all applicable health and safety legislation, policies, procedures, traffic protection requirements and safe work practices.
Prepare for assignments independently, research routine technical issues, and continuously develop technical knowledge and survey expertise.
Communicate effectively within the survey team and with project stakeholders.
