About The Position

Pima County Transportation Department Construction Monitoring Division is seeking an experienced survey party chief to join our growing Survey Department. Duties will include but are not limited to establishing and monitoring survey control & monumentation, QA/QC of contractor construction staking. As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Three years of surveying field experience INCLUDING one year of experience supervising and training technical staff performing land surveying (which may be concurrent with general experience).
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • The County requires pre-employment background checks.
  • Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum two (2) years experience operating Trimble equipment.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D program.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience performing survey calculations.
  • Minimum one (1) years experience performing survey research.
  • Satisfactory completion of a construction surveying or elementary surveying course from an accredited college, vocational/technical school or military training may be substituted for two years of the required surveying experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews and participates in all phases of the work of an assigned survey crew
  • Supervises various types of land surveys, such as design, easement/property, land, construction, photogrammetry and as-built
  • Researches and analyzes available information and data affecting proposed survey projects from a variety of sources, and then organizes required work to develop the required additional information
  • Completes and applies mathematical equations and calculations to land surveying work
  • Performs calculations, before and after land survey projects
  • Selects the most time-/cost-efficient methods to accomplish a land survey project
  • Conducts field survey work using GPS equipment, total station electronic/optical instruments, and other devices required in land surveying work
  • Utilizes data collector devices to record and collect geospatial data for each project
  • Produces and maintains accurate notes, records and sketches of all work performed and data secured in manual logs, records and forms and in computer-based systems
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and ensures that all equipment, instruments, and devices are kept in good working order
  • Directs the implementation of needed work-site safety and traffic control procedures to assure safety of survey crews
  • Trains survey crew in technical land survey and safety methods, techniques and procedures
  • Assigns work to, and evaluates performance of assigned staff
