About The Position

Supervises the execution of surveying, GIS data, and/or Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) work for the City. This role participates in complex surveying, GIS data, and/or CADD activities, and is responsible for planning, assigning, and reviewing all surveyor and/or CADD projects. This position is part of a bargaining unit and subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. It is a Management Category III position that includes six additional Management Vacation Days and a $250/month Vehicle Allowance.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Surveying, Drafting and/or Design or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible surveying or varied technical work experience involving survey calculations, working with legal descriptions, field notes and plats.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a CADD operator using AutoCAD current versions.
  • One (1) year experience in the use and application of a proprietary brand of COGO (coordinate geometry software).
  • Work experience must include at least three (3) years of experience supervising field survey or CADD personnel.
  • Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
  • Must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads, including immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency.

  • Level IV Survey Technician Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the work of assigned staff, delegates and reviews work assignments, and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Manages daily workload assignments, provides technical support for projects, and handles staff scheduling.
  • Oversees file maintenance of all departmental computerized drafting software and assists other technical/professional personnel in the proper utilization of CADD equipment.
  • Supports project managers and engineers by preparing technical exhibits, preliminary plans, quantity estimates, and status reports.
  • Oversees the production of CAD drawings, GIS maps, field inspection reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications using current software programs.
  • Prepares visualizations, maps, charts, and graphs to support engineering and public works initiatives.
  • Establishes methods for tracking and monitoring productivity, prepares periodic reports on group productivity, and devises methods to improve productivity and efficiency.
  • Updates and maintains CADD Standards.
  • Responds to inquiries from internal staff, contractors, and residents regarding drainage, utilities, and project activities.
  • Develops and delivers training for technical staff on CAD drafting standards, GIS procedures, field inspection techniques, and software usage.
  • Meets with City and other personnel, including engineers and designers, to establish scope of work and schedules for completion; attends meetings to discuss survey needs on engineering projects.
  • Prepares and submits oral and written reports on survey crew work activities; maintains detailed and accurate records of activities and survey data.
  • Assists in monitoring, administering, and approving program work performed by consultants, including project review for compliance with City established procedures.
  • Researches public records requests as needed.
  • Conducts quality control reviews of technician work products for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensures accurate entry and maintenance of data in systems such as GIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Cityworks.
  • Assists with infrastructure maintenance contract support, including tracking quantities, verifying contractor performance, and preparing procurement documents.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous improvement, customer service excellence, and teamwork.
  • Performs related work as required.
