About The Position

The City of Kingman is seeking a Survey Instrument Technician to join its Engineering Department. This role involves operating survey instruments, taking accurate measurements, setting reference points, and ensuring equipment functionality. The technician will also contribute to updating the City's benchmarks and monumentation. This position reports to the City Surveyor and does not involve supervisory duties. The ideal candidate enjoys outdoor work, using equipment, and performing hands-on tasks with a strong attention to detail. They should be proficient in reading maps and plans, performing calculations, and communicating effectively with colleagues, contractors, and the public. Comfort working on active construction sites, maintaining situational awareness, and adhering to safety procedures is essential.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Coursework in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry supplemented by survey principles and techniques.
  • One year of field experience performing survey work required.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to employment.
  • Physically capable of moving about on construction sites.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of field experience performing survey work preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Operate survey instruments including GPS, total stations, levels, and data collectors to gather accurate field measurements for construction, topographic, and boundary surveys.
  • Perform mathematical calculations to establish property corners, reference points, staking locations, and project benchmarks.
  • Interpret maps, plats, plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Clean, check, and adjust survey equipment.
  • Assist with field operations.
  • Work safely in traffic and construction areas.
  • Help maintain benchmarks and monumentation.
  • Communicate professionally with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Support survey activities when the Survey Party Chief is unavailable.
