Survey Engineer (CCGT)

Bechtel Corporation•Cheyenne, WY
•Onsite

About The Position

The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is driving unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team have signed the EPC contract for the Cheyenne Power Hub Project, one of the largest gas-fired power generation facilities in the United States. The candidate will act as the Surveyor Field Engineer for the CCGT Area on the Cheyenne Power Hub Project in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Reporting to the Project Lead Surveyor, the Surveyor Field Engineer performs survey activities supporting construction of the CCGT Area, liaising with Field Engineering and Field Supervision. You will use design drawings, model, and specifications to determine commodity locations, maintain the project survey control network, produce survey CAD deliverables and as-built records, and provide technical survey support to Field Engineering and superintendents across a wide range of situations and configurations. #LI-BH1

Requirements

  • Requires a land surveying engineering degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience in heavy construction or industrial surveying, involving a mix of field and office duties with modern instruments and software, or 6-9 years of relevant work experience in the absence of a degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to always maintain a safe work ethic and work environment, and to walk the jobsite on uneven surfaces, climb ladders and scaffolding, and use standard issued PPE.
  • Prior siteworks surveying experience and knowledge of construction survey principles.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern robotic total stations, digital levels, and GNSS survey systems.
  • Experience working on multiple work fronts, working under time constraints, adapting to changing conditions, and working with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, forming working relationships with survey team members, other departments, contractors, and survey functional management.
  • Effective communication and excellent problem-solving ability, with intermediate level use of Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Bechtel construction procedures.
  • Proficiency with survey CAD software, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volume computations.
  • FAA Part 107 certification and experience as a UAV (drone) pilot.
  • Familiarity with heavy equipment machine control technology and with laser scan processing software such as Trimble RealWorks, Leica Cyclone, Faro Scene, or Autodesk ReCap.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the accurate layout of construction work and recordation of field data according to job specifications and appropriate survey methods.
  • Establishes, verifies, and maintains the project survey control network (total station, level loops, GNSS), and performs and reviews survey control field work including network least squares adjustments.
  • Performs verifications of subcontract survey control points and work, and validates subcontractor survey submittals.
  • Performs and checks survey computations, examines the accuracy of field data and collection methods, and prepares survey reports for all project disciplines and scopes.
  • Provides construction survey support to both Field Engineering and Field Supervision, including field data inspections of commodity installation readiness for pre-pours and post-pours.
  • Prepares survey CAD drawings including topographic features, breaklines, spot elevations, and contours, generates Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), and performs volume and cut/fill computations.
  • Maintains the project survey as-built model and provides civil project completion documentation including as-built records.
  • Imports and exports survey data, maintains layer management and CAD standards, and maintains and processes monitoring and settlement data.
  • Administers the survey work request program and survey data, coordinating requests with survey field personnel and craft professionals.
  • Supports implementation of the project's machine control technology, the UAV (drones) program, and 3D laser scanning operations including reality capture and processing of scan data.
  • Supports the measuring and test equipment (M&TE) process, weekly and monthly equipment collimation requirements, calibration baseline checks, and maintains calibration logs.
  • Supports the survey team's implementation of the project safety, quality, and environmental programs, and ensures the zero accident philosophy is adhered to in the operational area.
  • Reviews project design and engineering documents, model, and model data to ensure completeness and readiness for safe layout and verification.
  • Draws field sketches and as-built drawings, and supports Field Engineering in preparation of non-conformance reports, design change notices, and requests for information.
  • Prepares daily and periodic photographic progress reports, keeps supervisors informed on progress, and supports excavation permits and subsurface utility coordination.
