About The Position

Under the general direction of the Town Engineer and/or Assistant Town Engineer, this position supervises and performs lead technical work in an engineering surveying party, serving as the chief of party for the survey crew. The role involves inspecting construction projects as assigned and can include working as a solo crew chief or as part of a team. Occasional CAD work, calculations, or ancillary duties may be performed to assist field duties and act as a project manager.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of applicable mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Good knowledge of construction methods and materials.
  • Competent in solo surveying work and working as part of a crew.
  • Experience with surveying equipment – GPS and robotic total stations.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Thorough and attentive to details.
  • Able to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Proactive and deadline oriented.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as work orders, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, plans, specifications, and procedure manuals.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience surveying.
  • AutoCAD experience.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years experience in a crew chief position.
  • LiDAR and Trimble experience.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products, and Google Workspace products.
  • Knowledge of Auto CAD, GIS, and Laserfiche.

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently operate survey equipment including total stations, levels, GPS equipment, and data collectors, and collect data, reviewing it for accuracy.
  • Work as a one-person crew following directions from the Town Engineer or their designee.
  • Perform CAD functions, drafting profiles, cross-sections, topography, property maps, and details.
  • Perform a variety of tasks including ALTA/boundary, right-of-way surveys, control, topography, and construction surveys.
  • Perform calculations to reduce field notes, compute amounts of materials, and prepare partial and final estimates.
  • Interact with the public.
  • Research land records, deeds, titles, etc.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including local officials, engineers, contractors, and supervisors, during the planning phase of a project.
  • Adapt to situations and circumstances.
  • Maintain manual dexterity and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and terrain environments.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and organized records in accordance with all operations and work instructions.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and policies.
  • Read and interpret deeds and construction plan documents.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and initiative.
  • Anticipate, prevent, and solve problems proactively within the scope of authority.
  • Conduct field inspection of sanitary and storm sewer, sidewalk, road, building, and other related construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, proper methods, and Town Standards.
  • Maintain survey equipment and keep an inventory of supplies.
  • Fill in for and perform the tasks of other Engineering Department personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
