About The Position

The Department of Clinical Epidemiology is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our patients, visitors, faculty and staff through preventing and controlling the spread of infection at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC). In collaboration with the Infection Preventionists (IP), the Surveillance Technician conducts and reports surveillance on healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) using standardized definitions and other organisms of epidemiologic importance to identify trends. The Surveillance Technician uses electronic databases and software tools to report data to national and local stakeholders in collaboration with the Data Manager. The Surveillance Technician performs process measure audits using chart reviews. The Surveillance Technician processes data on hand hygiene, isolation compliance, and HAI prevention bundle elements to provide feedback to the IPs, staff and hospital leadership to drive successful outcomes and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, public health, epidemiology, clinical laboratory science, medical technology or related field or associates in nursing required.
  • At least a year of healthcare or public health experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of principles of epidemiology, infection prevention, infectious diseases and microbiology preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability in the following key skills/attributes: Analytical Problem solving Collaboration Oral and written communication Conflict resolution Data mining, report writing, and data presentation Adaptability Self-motivation Familiar with software technologies
  • Ability to flex schedule to ensure that off-shifts receive expertise and guidance from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology

Responsibilities

  • Conducts and reports surveillance on healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) using standardized definitions and other organisms of epidemiologic importance to identify trends.
  • Uses electronic databases and software tools to report data to national and local stakeholders in collaboration with the Data Manager.
  • Performs process measure audits using chart reviews.
  • Processes data on hand hygiene, isolation compliance, and HAI prevention bundle elements to provide feedback to the IPs, staff and hospital leadership to drive successful outcomes and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards.
