Banner Health is seeking passionate Surgical Techs for their Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The Surgical Tech will work alongside surgeons and nurses, assisting in various procedures under the direction of an RN. Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Current basic life support certification
  • Certification as a surgical technologist
  • One to two years of experience in a surgical technologist role OR three to four years in a surgical technologist role
  • Where applicable, must be registered with State Regulatory Agency.
  • Must be able to scrub proficiently on a minimum of two surgical specialties.
  • Requires manual dexterity and the ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations.
  • Requires the ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly.
  • Ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient.
  • Must stay abreast of new developments in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Selects and places surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery.
  • Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during surgical procedures.
  • Participates in the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students.
  • Is proficient to scrub on a minimum of two surgical specialties.
  • Assists the physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures, including cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions.
  • Works under high pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies and ensuring their working order.
  • Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff.
  • Checks the schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.
  • Anticipates the surgeon's needs by passing instruments and retracting tissue.
  • Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure.
  • Disposes of sharps and trash and places used supplies into the case cart for processing.
  • Participates in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges.
  • Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case.
  • Ensures that all surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate.
  • Assists with OR turnover between cases.
  • Participates in stocking, replenishing supplies, and cleaning operating rooms.
  • Follows safety procedures regarding medication labeling, handling of specimens, sharps, time-out procedures, radiation and laser safety, infection control, and assembling/disassembling instruments.
  • Participates in emergency call rotation.
