About The Position
UPMC Mercy is seeking Surgical Technologists—including new graduates from accredited programs—to join our General Operating Room team. This is your chance to build a rewarding career in a supportive, high-quality surgical environment.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program (college, vocational school, hospital, or military)
- 0–2 years of experience required
- CST or TSC certification required per state law
- CPR/BLS (AHA) required within 30 days of hire
- Act 34 Criminal Clearance (with renewal as required)

- Additional experience may qualify for Intermediate or Senior Surgical Technologist roles
- Experience may include a variety of surgical specialties (General, Ortho, Neuro, OB/GYN, Vascular, etc.)
- New grads may work up to 6 months prior to certification but must become certified within 6 months of program completion
- Some staff may be grandfathered and exempt from certification requirements
- Certified staff must meet credentialing CE requirements
- Non-certified staff must complete 30 CE hours every 2 years
Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain a sterile operating room environment
- Set up, operate, and ensure proper function of surgical instruments and equipment
- Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, handling supplies, and maintaining counts
- Handle specimens, apply dressings, and assist with patient preparation and positioning
- Support post-operative room turnover, safety, and aseptic standards
