About The Position

Performs duties in the scrub role as assigned, including preparing and maintaining the sterile field, managing specimens, counts, and medications, and assisting in emergency situations. The role also involves preparing the surgical field with necessary instruments and supplies, verifying availability per physician preference cards, and assisting with cleanup and turnover. Additionally, the Surgical Technologist may function as a Sterile Processing Technician to cover absences. The position requires the ability to recognize the needs and behaviors of specific age groups of patients treated and involves potential exposure to hazardous materials, life-threatening diseases, and radiation.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Tech program.
  • Good communication skills with ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others.
  • Ability to independently perform scrub duties.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Knowledgeable of standard OR procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledgeable of standard OR medical terminology.
  • Knowledgeable of standard OR safety practices and sterile techniques.
  • Ability to cooperate and work well with others.
  • CPR certification.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting (lifting 50 pounds occasionally and/or 25-50 pounds frequently and/or lifting 10-20 pounds constantly).
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment with established time constraints.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance for direct patient care.
  • Must use patient handling equipment for patient lifts of over 35 pounds or when patient is unable to assist, with at least one other associate, when available.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous OR experience strongly preferred.
  • New graduates must present copy of final transcripts and letters of recommendation from two clinical instructors.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares sterile field in a timely manner.
  • Complies with departmental policy and procedures regarding specimens, counts, medication to field, and disposition of contaminated instruments.
  • Maintains sterile field and boundaries prior to and during procedures.
  • Acts as preceptor, sharing knowledge in a supportive/educational manner.
  • Assists in emergency situations as assigned.
  • Maintains a safe work environment according to regulatory agency standards.
  • Maintains educational records and timecard.
  • Maintains competencies.
  • Verifies instruments/supply/equipment available and ready per physician preference card.
  • Verifies specific needs of physician by reading scrub tips.
  • Assists in opening sterile supplies and instruments.
  • Assists with clean up and turnover upon completion of case.
  • Efficiently utilizes supplies to avoid waste and decrease cost.
  • May function in role of Sterile Processing Technician as needed to cover vacation and other days off.
