About The Position

Riverside Smithfield Hospital, a new facility in Smithfield, Virginia, is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join their team. This role assists with the coordination of patient care in the operating room, functioning as a vital member of the surgical team. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing and maintaining equipment, instrumentation, and supplies on the sterile field, utilizing both simple and complex equipment. They will also be involved in cleaning and replenishing equipment and supplies to ensure quality patient care, participating in quality assurance, in-service, and customer service programs. This position also handles the management of specimens and surgical counts, and is expected to act as an expert for specific surgical services, monitoring the surgical schedule for equipment and supply needs, preparing for daily cases, supporting the Specialty Nurse with surgeon preference cards, and educating the team on service changes. The role may require floating among Riverside Health System (RHS) facilities and performing similar competencies. The Surgical Technologist collaborates with physicians to meet the specialized needs of surgical patients, building trusting relationships to ensure optimal outcomes. They anticipate supply and equipment needs in advance for timely and cost-effective arrangements, and monitor personal and departmental needs, including flexing and shift changes. A strong sense of surgical conscience is expected, maintaining an aseptic environment and recording breaks in technique per AORN Standards. Proficient knowledge of procedure-specific instruments, equipment, and supplies is required, along with adherence to National Patient Safety Goals, RHS policies, and guidelines from AORN, CMS, and DNV. The role involves maintaining and updating preference cards, building collaborative relationships with a multi-disciplinary team, and providing feedback on supply utilization and new equipment evaluations to identify cost containment and waste reduction solutions. They will also participate in training and support of team members, volunteers, and students, and actively assist the perioperative registered nurse. Accurate handling of specimens and surgical counts is essential, as is demonstrating a sense of urgency to facilitate positive customer experiences throughout the department and facility.

Requirements

  • Licensed as Surgical Technologist with State of Virginia Upon Hire(Required)
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) within 90 Days(Required)
  • Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Upon Hire(Required) or Tech in Surgery - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Upon Hire(Required)

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the coordination of nursing care of the patient in the operating room and functions as a team member of the surgical team.

  • Expected to float among RHS facilities and perform like competencies.
  • Collaborates with physicians to provide for the specialized needs of the surgical patient.

  • Anticipates supply equipment needs in advance so that arrangements can be made in a timely and cost effective manner.

  • Demonstrates a surgical conscience by maintaining an aseptic environment during the surgical procedure and by recording breaks in technique per AORN Standards.
  • Demonstrates consistent proficient knowledge of procedure specific utilization of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Responsible for assuring safe practices as referenced in the National Patient Safety Goals and by following RHS policies and procedures, as well as guidelines outlined in AORN, CMS, and DNV.
  • Identifies and reports noncompliance or violations appropriately.
  • Ensures preference cards are maintained and updated by consistently communicating changes to appropriate team members.
  • Demonstrates the ability to build collaborative professional relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs.
  • Participates and provides feedback in supply utilization, new equipment/product evaluations; identifying and recommending solutions for cost containment and waste reduction.
  • Participates positively in training and support of all team members, volunteers and students.
  • Actively supports and assists the perioperative registered nurse and team in the care of the patients.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for accurate handling/management of specimens and surgical count.
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency to facilitate positive customer throughout the department/facility.
  • Addresses customers' needs regardless of assignment.
