About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, Surgery Department, and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing surgical scrub on minor and major surgical procedures, inclusive of endoscopy procedure, dependent on individual competencies. This role involves cleaning, organizing, and sterilizing instruments and equipment, maintaining aseptic technique, and preparing for surgical cases. The technologist will assist the surgeon, anticipate needs, maintain an organized sterile field, and ensure patient safety initiatives are followed. Responsibilities also include operating and maintaining specialized equipment, stocking supplies, participating in a rotational call system, assisting with room cleaning between cases, ordering supplies, and maintaining various logs. Additionally, the role assists in scheduling procedures, ensuring practitioners have appropriate privileges, and confirming the availability of necessary resources. The technologist must ensure standard precautions and required protective apparel are used and assist with housekeeping as needed.

Requirements

  • At least one year of general surgery scrub experience or graduate from an accredited surgical technologist training school.
  • Current verification of competency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation for all age groups served.
  • OSHA Blood Borne Risk Category I.

  • Certification in Operating Room Technology desired.

Responsibilities

  • Provide surgical scrub on minor and major surgical procedures, including endoscopy.
  • Clean, organize, and sterilize instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain aseptic technique and proper cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing techniques.
  • Identify and correct any breaks in technique.
  • Utilize safety precautions in the cleaning and sanitation of all equipment and supplies.
  • Plan and prepare cases by reviewing pertinent literature, surgeon preference cards, and manufacturer information, and collaborating with healthcare team members.
  • Assist the surgeon with efficient scrub skills and anticipate their needs.
  • Maintain an organized sterile table and mayo stand.
  • Assure patient safety initiatives and participate in site verification processes.
  • Perform sponge and sharps counts.
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning before use.
  • Handle surgical specimens accurately.
  • Operate and maintain specialized instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Handle instruments and equipment properly to preserve their integrity.
  • Report the need for repair or enter maintenance requests for equipment.
  • Organize and stock instruments, equipment, and supplies utilized in the operating room and the entire department.
  • Participate in a rotational call system as needed.
  • Assist in cleaning the operating room between cases.
  • Order supplies in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.
  • Check for outdated supplies monthly.
  • Maintain humidity and temperature logs in OR 1 & 2 daily.
  • Maintain logs on flasher, autoclave, and Steris use.
  • Help maintain logbooks on endoscopy/surgical procedures and sterilization processes.
  • Assist in the scheduling of surgery and endoscopy procedures.
  • Ensure practitioners have delineated clinical privileges for requested procedures.
  • Ensure availability of space, personnel, and equipment for requested procedures.
  • Assist in pre-procedure and post-procedure care of patients undergoing surgical/endoscopic procedures.
  • Ensure standard precautions and required protective apparel are utilized.
  • Assist in housekeeping of the department when needed.
